another way to enjoy these books
Revisado: 05-09-23
Finding a romance to listen to isn't always easy for me because a lot of times, the voices bug me. That's definitely not the case here! I loved listening to the first book. Even better, my husband is enjoying it with me. This was already one of my favorites series, but I'm loving that I can enjoy it in a whole new way.

Revisado: 05-23-20
This was a very enjoyable read, and I am excited that I already have two more in the series ready to read.
The narration was well done, and the voice was perfect for the MC. I think this is my first book read by Daniel, and look forward to hearing more by him in the future.
The story is very entertaining and well done. I love a book where you think you know what is going on, and maybe you do have a clue, but there are enough twists and turns that you'll never guess the whole story. If you were on the fence about this book, then I say hurry up and start listening.

A good beginning
Revisado: 05-23-20
The story is great. I liked a lot of the litrpg concepts that Stone used, and didn't feel overly bombarded by stats, even when your are hearing of multiple character sheets. I do feel like some of the more interesting parts of the story were a bit rushed and should have been more fleshed out.
The narrator did well, and had identifiable voices for each character. He is not among my favorite narrators, but I believe that to be an issue of personal preference as opposed to a lack of skill. His work with well enough that I will not shy away from listening to any of Graves' vocal work in the future.

Historia
The neons do as they're told. Chemically bound to their masters by the experimental chemi-chip implant created from alien technology, they are genetically engineered at rapid rates to be servants for the survivors of the war against alien invaders. Without neons, reconstruction would be impossible. Colin Hanston - the unremarkable son of the genius who invented the chemi-chip - leads a simple life as a farmer, helping feed his district as any good citizen should. But when he redeems his voucher for a neon servant of his own named Michael, everything changes.

Where does it end? Keep guessing till the end.
Revisado: 01-04-20
Authority will keep you on your toes, in that the path of the book is never what you think. Just when you think the book will end one way, it completely changes direction. This type of unpredictability is very lacking in most stories you read today. The constant change in pace and direction kept my interest, but sometimes lost me as to the point of the book. At one point I wondered if the author knew how to end a book or if he had a hard time deciding what this book was going to be. I feel like it was a common ending trope, which is why I'm giving it a "4" star review. That being said, it was still a fun ride to the end.
Ray Porter is great in this, and he helps carry the slower parts of the story. It was his name in the credits that inspired me to request a code for Authority, and I really wasn't disappointed.

Different from the first, but still great.
Revisado: 01-03-20
The story focuses mainly on the big event talked about at the end of book 1. Understand that this is not like book 1, and the author very much fleshes out the big battle to take up most of the book. This read reminded me of Justin Miller's "World Seed", where sometimes the mechanics and stats force the story to take a backseat. Sometimes I caught myself thinking "This section about mechanics in interesting, but when are we going to get on with the story?" That being said, hang in there, because Jonathan does wonderful in parts that carry the story for the last half of the book. The narrator does a great job with the read, and I have no issues continuing to listen to him.

Ready for book 2
Revisado: 01-03-20
I loved the interesting twist on a recently overdone category. This twist kept my interest for the first half of the book until things got interesting. The main reason I rated the story a "4" was due to the author not picking up the pace fast enough, yet skipping/fast forwarding over the parts that should have been fleshed out a bit more. If you pay attention to the author's note at the end of the book, this is well explained.
Book 1 and 2 were originally going to be the same book, but then Jonathan wanted the expand out the origin of the character and separated the two. After listening to book 2 I fully understand this decision, but think a focus on a few skipped parts would have made this feel like more of a complete book.
The narrator does well, but falls into the category of 1.25 times speed for me. A common issue I've ran into recently with narrators taking a bit too long to tell the story. I enjoyed the premise and story well enough to quickly grab book 2 and start reading immediately. See you in book 2's review page.

A good start
Revisado: 01-03-20
The story is presented to you from an interesting perspective. I enjoyed listening to the MC's journey, but felt like it was too short lived. I this the first 90% of the book would have made for a great prequel/set-up for a larger series.
Tess Irondale lends her amazing talent to sometime carry the book along its slower parts. Tess is an underrated talent that should be narrating more noteworthy books (definitely not to talk back about this enjoyable story). I have begun to specifically search for books narrated by Tess, and I haven't been disappointed so far.

Revisado: 01-03-20
R. C. Bray reading a Sci-Fi Noir book... I'll take 10!
The book itself is great. The style and humor melds well together and kept me listening. This 7.5 hr book was supposed to last me the week, but I think I knocked it out in just a couple days because I just couldn't put it down. The author does a great job in making you care for a character that you may not agree with. Chris also does a wonderful job making you feel what the MC is going through in his condition/situation. I hope more books connected to the series come out, and am especially interested in a prequel.
R. C. Bray did a great service for me, as it was originally his name attached to the book that got me interested. Is there really anything more to say about this man's talent? Continue being a beast, Bray.

That ending...
Revisado: 11-02-19
This books wasn't for me. It might have been just too teen for me.
Narration: A bit more editing and a better mic or soundproofing would have done well for the performance. The ambient noise levels were a bit high through most of the book, and admittedly I was wearing headphones so I could pick up on that a bit more that someone driving and listening through their stereo. I could live with the noise level itself, but the editing of silence between sentences and paragraphs didn't have any background noise created unsettling drop offs in the audio that pointed out the ambient noise even more when the audio clicked back on. There were also a few repeated words and sentences throughout the reading. The voice was okay, but it was a bit difficult at time to tell which character was talking.
Story: Once again, not for me. I came in expecting a vr scifi close to a gamelit or litrpg and got a teen action/drama story with scifi sprinkled in for effect. The story was okay, but I did find many parts predictable. I also felt much of the narrator's thoughts could have been shorted, as many sentences felt like they repeated the previous sentence's meaning and just said it a different way. Lastly, the ending was a bit dorky, but did buy me a cheap laugh at the end. Don't take the book too seriously and you should be okay.

For despite his humble Midwest origins, Luke is no ordinary teenager. Imbued with super powers following a ritualistic exchange of blood with a dragon, Luke soon discovers the awesome legacy of his birthright and must learn to accept the fact that he is known in this other world as the Chosen One. Still, in the tradition of Marvel Comics' Stan Lee, creator of modern superheroes like Spider-Man and Silver Surfer, Lazaris's Dragonman is unquestionably human, grappling with his doubts and fears even as he sets off to save Earth from alien beings hell-bent on destruction.

Be Kind, Rewind
Revisado: 11-02-19
Let me start by saying there is a good book (or three) in here.
I really wanted to like this book. It has a great concept and lots of content. Sadly, it has too much content. The book his numerous interesting story ideas and plot devices, but the author doesn't hold onto them. It seems like one page is spend building a part of the story, and the next page is giving you the resolution for the event. Numerous times, I found myself rewinding because I missed the quick resolution given and was already onto another part of the story. I think Ted had too many Ideas for the story that he couldn't give enough time to almost any part of the story.
If you read Ted's bio you may come to understand some of the difficulties he must have had on the journey to write this book. I think there truly is something great in here, but some meat has to be added to these bones.
The narration wasn't the worst for this one, but if you look ahead at the next books in the series, you can see that narrators tend to change from book to book. I'm sure it is tough to find the right narrator for your first book, but this one might be better off being read than listened to.
