Captivating Story & Performace.
Revisado: 10-20-24
I fell into this SM cadet series because I really enjoy Terry Mancour's storytelling, and I love Finty's Williams' voice. This story was excellent, I was extremely excited about a series focused on Darah, who is usually portrayed as one of the more competent and capable mages, but also as one of the least likable and relatable female protagonists in the SM universe. I was not disappointed to find her perspective on things familiar and, as gaining perspective often precedes, my opinion of her changed significantly.

Historia
After facing war, death, unruly gods, and unmitigated evil, Minalan the Spellmonger is forced to return to Farise, the site of his earliest battles, with the simple assignment to conquer the subtropical city-state and expel the pirates that plague the kingdom’s shipping. Tired of warfare, Minalan embarks on a clandestine campaign to do so, assuming an alias and setting up shop in Farise as a mere Practical Adept as cover for his operation. Recruiting a cadre of talented agents to assist, he reluctantly begins the task of infiltrating and observing Farisian society.

Pretty Good
Revisado: 01-28-24
Story is written dispassionately in many ways, and frankly, the protagonist is boring and 2-dimensional. That said, it's a competent story and there are a lot of good ideas. The epilogue is cringey.

Weird, unnecessary mid-story romantic subplot
Revisado: 11-13-23
Spoilers.
I am absolutely certain that the love cube that the main character/author decides to institute halfway through the book breaks some principle of storytelling. It's very cringey and completely unnecessary.

I feel like a lot went unexplored...
Revisado: 06-30-23
The Expanse has always been a human story, I understand and acknowledge that. I'm not sure we needed a story about an occupation...it was just tedious at times. There's a whole universe of alien tech out there, and we barely get to interact with it. That is despite the amazing prose, as always.

Historia
Twenty years ago, it was as if someone turned on a light. The future blazed into existence with each deliberate word that William Gibson laid down. The winner of Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, Neuromancer didn't just explode onto the science fiction scene - it permeated into the collective consciousness, culture, science, and technology.Today, there is only one science fiction masterpiece to thank for the term "cyberpunk," for easing the way into the information age and Internet society.

Intricately complex story, narrator whispers
Revisado: 01-02-23
Story is far too intricate for this narrative style, according to me, I acknowledge that I am in the minority.
What really, REALLY bothers me is the narrator's apparently very strong compulsion to whisper every female and/or androgynous voice as if any person could actually speak like that without being laughed at. I find whispering in audiobok narration IMMENSELY annoying on several different levels, so much so that it breaks the experience for me.
Sorry to be so negative, Gibson is a great scifi writer, but doesn't employ a style of writing that lends itself to a narrative experience. I listened to the Silmarillion - something that was never meant to be published as a cohesive story, and enjoyed it much more than this book.
still ranking 4 stars because of the massively influential cyberpunk impact of this story, and because I doubt I could do better.

Historia
The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.
