Historia
Swept up as a child in the events of Nazi-era Europe, Ruth Kluger saw her family's comfortable Vienna existence systematically undermined and destroyed. By age 11, she had been deported, along with her mother, to Theresienstadt, the first in a series of concentration camps that would become the setting for her precarious childhood. Interwoven with blunt, unsparing observations of childhood and nuanced reflections of an adult who has spent a lifetime thinking about the Holocaust, Still Alive rejects all easy assumptions about history, both political and personal.

Eloquent

Writing is clearly Klüger’s artistic calling. Very beautifully written from the perspective of her younger and present self. Unfortunately the narrator’s vocal fry made it hard for me to listen to.

Historia
On a sunny morning in May 1939, a phalanx of 867 women - housewives, doctors, opera singers, politicians, prostitutes - was marched through the woods 50 miles north of Berlin, driven on past a shining lake, then herded in through giant gates. Whipping and kicking them were scores of German women guards. Their destination was Ravensbrück, a concentration camp designed specifically for women by Heinrich Himmler, prime architect of the Holocaust.

This is a must read/ listen
Revisado: 02-21-25
Incredible narration, well organized chapters, incredibly well written, horrifying testimony but an important narrative about the holocaust. Heartbreaking, gut wrenching, and exemplary resilience. I highly recommend this book.

Not as exciting as the book description
Revisado: 02-05-25
The title description makes this book sound like it’s going to be daring and harrowing. It is mostly Browder hyping himself and his financial achievements. Sergei is a very minor character and his imprisonment only comes into play in the final 1/4 of book. Book is mostly about Browder’s investments. Not as exciting or interesting as I expected.

Historia
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

Historia
More than a quarter of a million Americans crossed the continental United States between 1840 and 1870, going west in one of the greatest migrations of modern times. The frontiersmen have become an integral part of our history and folklore, but the Westering experiences of American women are equally central to an accurate picture of what life was like on the frontier. Through the diaries, letters, and reminiscences of women who participated in this migration, Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey gives us primary source material on the lives of these women.

Interesting history
Revisado: 08-16-24
It is impressive to learn the history of (WASP) women making their journey westward. I was disappointed by the authors multiple inclusions of racial slurs that added nothing to the story but made me cringe to keep listening. It’s certainly a very one sided version of traveling westward.

For six years, journalist Patricia Evangelista documented killings carried out by police and vigilantes in the name of then president Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs—a crusade that led to the slaughter of thousands—immersing herself in the world of killers and survivors and capturing the atmosphere of terror created when an elected president decides that some lives are worth less than others.

Evangelista explains the political system in the Philippines both historically and contemporarily as well as the societal structures that shape the people and players of that system. She intertwines individual lives and emotions of those impacted by the politics in the Philippines quite powerfully.
