I didn't like the ending.
Revisado: 01-09-24
R L Stein is known for his twist endings that leave you guessing, but without spoiling anything, I disliked this one. The voice acting was fine, though.

Historia
A mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video-game industry. In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video-game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But all that would change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a former Mattel executive who knew nothing about video games and everything about fighting uphill battles.

The Cheesiness is Just Part of the Fun!
Revisado: 09-15-23
Absolutely anyone who has experienced "Console Wars" will likely tell you that the writing & dialogue is a bit corny or cheesy. They're not wrong, but I think it's a mistake to hold this fact against the author - the cheesiness is just part of what makes the book so much fun. If you're hesitant to give this audiobook a listen because you heard the writing is cheesy, don't be. I say give the book a chance & listen.
The book is more or less written from the perspective of Tom Kalinske, head of Sega of America. As such, it should come as little surprise that this piece is very one-sided in favor of Sega, portraying them as an underdog who stands up against the monopolistic titan known as Nintendo. To be fair, Nintendo WAS pretty monopolistic back one the late 80's & early 90's, and that sort of thing is MUCH more frowned upon here in America than it is in Japan & other eastern countries, so the idea that Nintendo would be portrayed in such a light makes sense, but this seeming bias is something you should be aware of.
Additionally, be warned: This piece is meant to be "Based on a true story" and anyone who has researched that phrase as it applies to any media knows that the writer is allowed to make a lot of stuff up. While this book was heavily researched & does contain much truth about video game history, there are many details that were likely made up. It is my understanding that all necessary legal disclaimers are in place to warn you about this fact, but the bottom line is that I'm pretty sure 99% of the dialogue never happened & is made up (hence, the cheesiness) and I'm reasonably certain that some of the equally cheesy moments didn't happen either. Still, as this is meant to be a dramatization of real events, rather than the events EXACTLY as they happened, this should come as no real surprise. I'm not saying you shouldn't pick up this book because it's "all lies" or anything, I'm just saying that you should be aware that this book does contain light inaccuracies & it's something you should be aware of. Take things with a grain of salt, is all.
Fred Berman does a terrific job narrating this piece, too! His voice might actually contribute to the cheesiness, but that's not his fault, that's just what his voice is, I guess, and it matches the fun cheesiness of this book so well that I can't imagine anyone else narrating Console Wars. I felt that his impressions of Japanese accents weren't insulting or rude. In fact, they seemed fairly accurate. Perhaps you'll think differently, but I can't imagine most of you will. If you're interested in other stuff he's narrated, look up "The Dirt" by the members of the rock band "Motley Crue" where they tell their gross, nasty stories about all the women and drugs they drowned themselves in back in their heyday - That piece is narrated by a full cast, and Fred Berman is part of it.

Sets The Standard For YouTuber Biographies!
Revisado: 12-17-22
I absolutely loved this book! Not enough YouTubers write autobiographies, or have officially licensed biographies in general, and now one of the all-time greatest and one of my favorites comes out with one? I'm in all the way!
In particular, I love how James narrated this whole audiobook himself! When autobiographies are narrated by the person they're about, it often adds a lot, and in this it certainly did!
I love how funny some of these stories are, too! I want SO BADLY to see that video James made about him & his college dorm mates, and that's just one example of funny things you'll love too!
If you have any interest in Cinemassacre or the Angry Video Game Nerd or indie filmmaking whatsoever, but this book! You will NOT be disappointed!

The Sinister Truth Behind Playboy
Revisado: 11-29-22
First off, I can always respect an audio-memoir a little bit more when it's read by the author.
Secondly, I absolutely LOVE Holly's impressions of everybody, especially Hef in particular. It makes sense that she'd know how to do an impression of him, but still, spot on! Not just for him, but for everybody. Spot on!
Thirdly, I always knew there were sinister forces behind Playboy, but HOLY MOLY! I won't spoil anything, but WOW! Holly had some spicy, nasty secrets to share with the world!
Fourthly and finally, If I can add in one tiny criticism, Holly acts a little bit *too* much like she's mostly innocent one in all of this. Yes, she's still enough of a victim that I still feel for her, but her actions are still her own and at the end of the day she's still mostly a victim of her own actions. That doesn't make the way Hef treated her RIGHT, but I would have appreciated it if she owned up to her mistakes a little more. She definitely does that a little throughout, but maybe a little more would have been nice, just saying.
Still, a fantastic read! If you have any interest, buy it!

I want MORE!
Revisado: 11-18-22
I grew up with the bathroom reader franchise, and as an adult I still love them! Trouble is, I don't always have time to read them, what with my long work hours. We are allowed to listen to audiobooks at my place of employment during work hours, so... MORE PLEASE! I'll buy every audiobook you guys can pump out, I promise!
For the sake of actual reviewing, I'd like to state for the record that I love how this audiobook manages to include Uncle John's famous "Running Feet" in the mix - that is, they integrate the "fun facts" that are normally at the bottom of every page below the articles very seamlessly! They're iconic to the series in their own way, and I like how they were implemented.
Additionally, I adore how they hired a full cast of several voice actors because I kind of get the sense that if they'd hired only one person to read the whole thing, it'd be possible for readers to "tune out" without realizing it, and not realize another article has started. Since no voice actor reads two articles right next to each other, it's easier to accidentally tune out, and then later go "Oh, this is a DIFFERENT article! I know because the voice actor is a different person than before I tuned out without realizing it!"
And finally, the sound effects add a lot! They're not corny or intrusive in my opinion, and I feel that they help rather than obstruct the way some audiobooks do.
PRAISE BE TO UNCLE JOHN!

Not for the easily offended, and that's the point! I can't stand Cancel Culture. If you hate the thought of people having different opinions than you, you're a bad person. You don't have to agree with everything Jr says, but hating him for that same reason makes you a COWARD.

What should Carly Beth be for Halloween this year? TERRIFIED! Late at night, an ugly green mask is mysteriously calling out to her, and ugly green masks don't like to be ignored. If Carly Beth survives the night, even a scary theme park might sound like a vacation. Or maybe not! At HorrorLand, every night is Halloween. And those monster masks? They aren't masks at all.

Revisado: 04-16-22
I appreciated how this story didn't just feel like a re-hash of the previous Haunted Mask story. It wasn't just "Same thing, just happening again" It felt unique enough to have its own identity. I like how Carly-Beth has matured since last time & isn't a scaredy-cat anymore, she's grown & changed since we last saw her! It's cool!

Jodie loves visiting her grandparents' farm. Okay, so it's not the most exciting place in the world. Still, Grandpa tells great scary stories. And Grandma's chocolate chip cookies are the best. But this summer the farm has really changed. The cornfields are sparse. Grandma and Grandpa seem worn out. And the single scarecrow has been replaced by twelve evil-looking ones. Then one night Jodie sees something really odd. The scarecrows seem to be moving. Twitching on their stakes. Coming alive...
