Historia
Meet Laszlo, eight-hundred-year-old demon and Hell’s least productive Curse Keeper. From his office beneath Midtown, he oversees the Drakeford Curse, which involves a pathetic family upstate and a mysterious black monolith. It’s a sexy enough assignment—colonial origins, mutating victims, et cetera—but Laszlo has no interest in maximizing the curse’s potential; he’d rather sunbathe in Ibiza, quaff martinis, and hustle the hustlers on Manhattan’s subway.

Historia
DCI Kenny Murrain sees, hears and feels things that others do not. It’s a gift but also a curse. When he wakes to the phantom sound of screaming, he knows a murder has been committed, but not where or why. Then a woman’s body is found in a Stockport hotel room. It’s a murder that seems both frenzied and carefully planned, the scene expertly cleansed of any evidence.

The esp aspects of the detective were weird but the plot was interesting.
I wish the narrator was better at distinguishing characters.

I always love Angus' narration but this one was a bit off, he has a difficult time with female voices, not so convincing. And there were parts of the story that didn't hang together for me.

Historia
When Lydia takes a job running the Senior Citizens’ Social Club three afternoons a week, she assumes she’ll be spending her time drinking tea and playing gentle games of cards. The members of the Social Club, however, are not at all what Lydia was expecting. From Art, a failed actor turned kleptomaniac to Daphne, who has been hiding from her dark past for decades to Ruby, a Banksy-style knitter who gets revenge in yarn, these seniors look deceptively benign—but when age makes you invisible, secrets are so much easier to hide.

Fun characters and a good plot makes a good story. The narrator is fine, just not quite right for male characters.

Cliched and unbelievable
Revisado: 10-08-24
It has an interesting premise but the characters are not interesting (well, except Dad, who is awesome), it’s repetitive (another Geezer?, get a thesaurus!) and it’s really really annoying that the 40 something detective is superhuman with his getting kicked and punched and effortlessly running after suspects 🙄

The characters are all awful and the story didn’t grab me. I couldn’t believe how Chloe handled learning about Joshua’s death, I would expect her to be more devastated even if she was having memory issues.

Too many characters, ridiculous amounts of backstory for irrelevant characters, plot holes so numerous if this were a street it would be impossible to drive, cliche detectives, but the writing is good.

Great story
Revisado: 01-10-24
I really enjoyed this book, it was interesting and fresh. Wil Wheaton is a fun narrator, he does a great job infusing emotion into the characters and humor where appropriate. My only complaint about his narration is that I wish he did a stronger job in distinguishing character voices. There were times when I was confused as to who was speaking.

Good story, bad engineering
Revisado: 12-12-23
I enjoyed the plot and I find the characters very interesting, although somewhat irritating. I cannot comprehend why the author is so invested in keeping Liz and Jim together, she's really a horrible person. I will listen to the next book, but if the domestic issues aren't handled better I don't know about another after that.
The corruption plot is very good and it's intriguing to follow along and try to determine who the villains are.
The narration is great, I love David Monteath's voices and accents BUT I don't know who the audio engineer is for this work - whoever they are, they're lousy. I kept having to switch the volume up and down to capture words and then try to lessen the deafness from the sudden blasts of sound. Ugh.
