Mortis: A Horrible Mess
Revisado: 01-06-23
TL: DR - You can skip this one. I'll put spoilers below of what little relevant plot occurred in this entirely too long and unnecessary story.
After Abnett appeared to put the Siege of Terra (SoT) back on the right track with his triumph of Saturnine, John French sabotages any ground gained by falling into many of the same traps that all too frequently derailed the Horus Heresy series. Pointless side plots, awkward structure, and a vertiable parade of (boring) D-list side characters all combine to make this 14+ hour novel a joyless slog. For a fun drinking game, take a shot every time the author uses a simile (you'll be on the floor in about 20 minutes or less!)
In short: I was not a fan. There are two segments with Perturabo and a good couple of moments with Katsuhiro there is little to redeem this one. Should you skip this book, here's a summary of relevant events which will probably be of note in future novels -
*Spoilers*
- Horus, angered by the events of Saturnine relieves Perturabo of command. Rather than be reassigned to the front line, Pert and his legion quit Terra; declaring the dream of taking vengance on the Emperor to be dead. A great scene and the only insight we are given to the traitor side in this novel.
- Imperials lose their Titans after a protracted battle that sees loyalist Titans battling against Traitor engines and the resurrected remains of former allies. Neat idea but so poorly implemented it just sucks. Titans have never felt so forced and boring. It doesnt help that all characters involved are so similarly named so there is no way to keep the battle straight in your mind.
- Oll Person and Grammaticus link up in the Emperors Children's horror hive and do...something...maybe? Its really hard to tell what they are doing in this story anymore.
- A Dark Angels company arrives with about 10k marines and make landfall. They retake the Astronomican but since this book didnt already have enough subplots the Fallen are among the landed and they sabotage efforts to re-light the becon. Its just like, why? Its so stupid and it doesnt work.
- The traitors reach the final wall after an agonizing book long distance countdown.
Here's hoping Warhawk does better.

Fantastic, Though Brief
Revisado: 01-29-19
I would honestly listen to these audio dramas in full length form. It’s a shame they are likely too expensive to produce!
Fantastic story set in pre-Imperial (!) space where the Eldar are just starting to come to the realization that they really can’t trust anything or anyone. I sincerely enjoy the way Gav Thorpe writes Eldrad. Really enjoyed giving this one a listen!
