That challenge was "Write me something that thinks as well as a human, but not like a human."

in book after book (see also especially Dogs of War/ Bear Head) AT does exactly that, and this one is just a masterclass blend of several such. Absolutely pyrotechnical, better than any except arguably Vernor Vinge, Larry Niven and Jerry Barnes... honestly rarefied territory.

Besides that we've got centuries spanning battles and negotiations for peace and tragic errors of perceptions and weird flowerings of unlikely combinations...

Cracking read, and the performance by the voice actors is overall really quite excellent.

You want all of Adrian Tchaikovsky, but you especially want this.

Wil is a great voice actor and when he tells you a story it stays told, and Mr. Scalzi has me in awe and wishing I could write that. But I gush.

The expository dumps of boring biographies almost made me give up. Glad I didn't.

Adrian Tchaikovsky is amazing. He really approaches the Campbellian ideal of writing characters who think as well as a human but not like a human.

Not only that, but they are also characters you come to care about, become invested in, in worlds which are plausible, layered, fascinating, and show relevance to ours.

Rex, Honey, Bees, HumOS, and even Dragon (more a supporting character) grow and change in the harsh circumstances of a world they were literally made to serve, but in the end they have the power to change their world as well. The Moray is a villain of our time, transformative but in his genius bringing good as well as pain (and the twist reveal of his final structure is perfect).

Dogs of War is a deeply moving tale of humanity, in the largest nonspecific sense, matching up against inhumanity through the constructions of humans.

Do you know how much your government does? Do you know how badly the current one is dropping the ball? Packed with information, this book is informative and a very easy read, moving smoothly topic to topic.

The analysis and advice on living an ethically polyamorous life are great, presented smoothly with relevant examples. The narration is also very well done, clear and easy to listen to. I subtract one star because when I buy a book advertised as "unabridged" I expect to receive the entire book; I do not expect a couple of dozen references to a Resources section that only exists "in the paper and e-dition versions of this book." Audible should either provide the missing section as a downloading addendum, as they have with other volumes, or refrain from claiming it to be the unabridged book.
