Historia
When journalist Lily Bigelow is found dead in the courtyard of Carrickfergus castle, it looks like a suicide. Yet there are a few things that bother Duffy just enough to keep the case file open, which is how he finds out that Bigelow was working on a devastating investigation of corruption and abuse at the highest levels of power in the UK and beyond. And so Duffy has two impossible problems on his desk: Who killed Lily Bigelow? And what were they trying to hide?

Spectacular narration
Revisado: 10-21-23
A good yarn with absolutely superb narration. I feel cheated by many mystery novels. The story draws me in, but at the end a sudden, improbable unraveling disappoints me. To avoid spoilers, I will only say that is not what happens herein. But the best of it was the narration. The narrator creates vivid and distinct personalities for the varied group of characters. DI Duffy shines brightest.

Jack Reacher hits the pavement and sticks out his thumb. He plans to follow the sun on an epic trip across America, from Maine to California. He doesn’t get far. On a country road deep in the New England woods, he sees a sign to a place he has never been: the town where his father was born. He thinks, What’s one extra day? He takes the detour.

Even worse than watching Tom Cruise
Revisado: 04-18-22
My first Jack Reacher novel. This story is riven with implausibilities and populated by cardboard characters. (The narrator made the best of a poor situation.)

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Explosive
Revisado: 12-18-19
This is as close to a page turner as non-fiction can be. It is on the New York Times "Ten best books of 2019" list for good reason. Fascinating and frightening. I read it in parallel with watching the Netflix miniseries "Chernobyl". I recommend listening to about four hours of the book before starting the series.

Historia
Making a living reproducing famous artworks for a popular online retailer and desperate to improve her situation, Claire is lured into a Faustian bargain with Aiden Markel, a powerful gallery owner. She agrees to forge a painting - a Degas masterpiece stolen from the Gardner Museum - in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But when that very same long-missing Degas painting is delivered to Claire's studio, she begins to suspect that it may itself be a forgery. Her desperate search for the truth leads Claire into a labyrinth of deceit where secrets hidden since the late 19th century may be the only evidence that can now save her life.

The narrators voice was a major disappointment
Revisado: 11-15-15
I did not enjoy the narrator's depictions of the male characters. There was no variation or distinct characteristics that helped the listener recognize one male character from another. Ever male character sounded like Gaston from beauty and the beast. Pompous and caricature. Nor did I enjoy the breathy, almost damsel in distress depiction of Claire. I found myself torn between enjoying the story, but not wanting to continue because the narrator's tone was so dramatized. Imagine listening to the actors in soap operas...but worse. No matter if the text was conveying an attribute of Claire that was intended to be perceived as strong and intelligent, her voice just made her sounds pathetic and naïve. Such a shame.

Historia
In Washington, the Kill Committee gathers in the White House's Situation Room to pick the next targets for the United States drone program. At an airbase just outside Las Vegas, a team of pilots, military personnel and intelligence officers follow through on the committee's orders, finding the men who have been deemed a threat to national security and sentenced to death. On the other side of the world, in the mountains where the drones hunt their prey, someone has decided to fight back.

A good yarn . . . and something of an education
Revisado: 07-27-14
Clarke has spun a story that moves right along and certainly kept me engaged. I knew precious little about drones at the outset. It proved to be an education about both the ethics and the mechanics of drone warfare. In addition, if one fifth of what is accomplished by the various hackers and electronic intruders is actually feasible, it is also a tad on the scary side.

Not RLS's best yarn
Revisado: 06-06-12
The prose is magnificent. The premise (two brothers on opposite sides of a rebellion) was sound. The performance was very good. But the story disappointed. The elder brother failed in the credibility category. The abrupt flight in the middle of the night to NYC, the sudden trip up the Hudson, and the bizarre ending in the snowy woods of upstate NY made little sense. This one did not shiver my timbers.

I found this book stunningly "girly". My wife loved it. I quit halfway through. I had hoped to learn more about EH. It was much too much, "how girls chase boys", for my taste.

Historia
Switters is a contradiction for all seasons: an anarchist who works for the government, a pacifist who carries a gun, a vegetarian who sops up ham gravy, a cyberwhiz who hates computers, a robust bon vivant who can be as squeamish as any fop, a man who, though obsessed with the preservation of innocence, is aching to deflower his high-school-age stepsister (only to become equally enamored of a nun ten years his senior). Yet there is nothing remotely wishy-washy about Switters. He doesn't merely pack a pistol. He is a pistol.

Robbins makes wondererful use of the language. The ending left a bit to be desired but the reader will forgive Robbins because of the richness of the prose.
