It's just so depressing. At least in the beginning. I gave up waiting for something positive to happen & finally gave up 1/3 way through

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Historia
What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia is a frank assessment of America's recent fascination with the people and problems of the region. The audiobook analyzes trends in contemporary writing on Appalachia, presents a brief history of Appalachia with an eye toward unpacking Appalachian stereotypes, and provides examples of writing, art, and policy created by Appalachians as opposed to for Appalachians. The audiobook offers a much-needed insider's perspective on the region.

The author accuses JD Vance’s personal autobiography of hyper-focusing on his personal family history. Accusing him of excluding the experiences of all people if a different background. She then proceeds to do exactly the same. Excluding all people of poor, rural, white backgrounds.
I guess i can excuse JD Vance because his book is an autobiography. Not a history lesson. While Elizabeth Catte makes a HUGE deal in her introduction about bring an accurate historian and advertises her book as a truthful and open history of the region.

A very good book
Revisado: 11-23-23
This was excellent and uplifting. Charming and enjoyable. I loved it. What a relief from so many of the other current stories about sex & violence. Very gentle.
There is one caveat, however. All the non-minority people are pretty much noxious racists. It gently verges on warning minority children to be cautious of any contact with cis-normal humans. Be certain this is the message you want your child to have or be prepared to compensate for this message.
Otherwise it is a beautiful story with a lot of discussion points about racism. minorities can be harmed.

Historia
Early in 2013 Neil Hayward was at a crossroads. He didn't want to open a bakery or whatever else executives do when they quit a lucrative but unfulfilling job. He didn't want to think about his failed relationship with 'the one' or his potential for ruining a new relationship with 'the next one'. And he almost certainly didn't want to think about turning 40. And so instead he went birding. Birding was a lifelong passion. It was only among the birds that Neil found a calm that had eluded him in the confusing world of humans.

To look at racism. I live in the coast where we tend to despise everything from central US.
I think this sort of te-equilibrated my view of the US. It certainly explained a lot.
I learned and was depressed and was uplifted.

Historia
Every day, we find ourselves in gatherings, Priya Parker says in The Art of Gathering. If we can understand what makes these gatherings effective and memorable, then we can reframe and redirect them to benefit everyone, host and guest alike. Parker defines a gathering as three or more people who come together for a specific purpose. When we understand why we gather, she says - to acknowledge, to learn, to challenge, to change - we learn how to organize gatherings that are relevant and memorable.

A keeper, worth a second read
Revisado: 01-03-22
The most deadpan reader I’ve ever listened to. There were moments early on when I nearly gave up. I finally speeded up the book to get it over faster
An excellent, well thought out set of rules for gatherings. Mostly large work related gatherings. But Ms. Parker does occasionally stop to downsize the rules for personal use.
The only problem, for me, was Ms. Parker’s naive believe that if it works for her, it will work for everyone. I cringe to think how my mid-western high school graduate family would respond to a ‘Diner en Blanc’ and the $200+ buy-in cost for an all white, to be used once in a lifetime, ensemble. Or the sad envy on hearing how the amount of money privileged coastal families have available able for child activities. But common sense compensates for this shortcoming.
An excellent reference to keep
