Lovely Stories and Superb Narrators
Revisado: 07-04-23
Oscar Wilde was too great for this world. These short stories of Fairy Tales are superbly read and I was delighted and pleasantly surprised to hear Elaine Stritch’s telling of the last story, The Actress. I did not see her credited with this so I had not expected it! These are timeless tales of empathy and all the other human nature observations. I only have one complaint; the loudness is variable with each story so after hearing what I think was Dame Judy Dench, which I had to crank to 11, I was blasted out of my chair with the next narrator. So be careful when listening as the volume levels, fluctuate!

I was unable to finish this book. I found it very tedious. I like her music so I bought the book but now I have buyer’s remorse.

Historia
The definitive biography of Edward Gorey, the eccentric master of macabre nonsense. From The Gashlycrumb Tinies to The Doubtful Guest, Edward Gorey's wickedly funny and deliciously sinister little books have influenced our culture in innumerable ways, from the works of Tim Burton and Neil Gaiman to Lemony Snicket. Some even call him the Grandfather of Goth. An eccentric, a gregarious recluse, an enigmatic auteur of whimsically morbid masterpieces, yes - but who was the real Edward Gorey behind the Oscar Wildean pose?

Goreyaphile
Revisado: 07-18-19
I guess I don’t really care what sexual orientation an author or artist is. I have always appreciated his creative output regardless of his sexuality. The reason I gave the story a four star rating instead of five stars is that some areas of the book seemed to obsessively reiterate Edward Gorey’s s.o.

Needs a different Narrator
Revisado: 12-19-18
Being an Addam’s Family fan, I was interested in knowing more about the creator. I think the Narrator could have been more theatrical in his presentation. Would have liked John Aston, perhaps.

Historia
In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.... The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

Started out great but
Revisado: 10-10-17
This book started out intriguing. I liked the premise but, halfway through it became a chore to listen to. The narrator was very versatile but I guess it was just about 12 hours too long for me.

Historia
"You've long set your heart against it, Axl, I know. But it's time now to think on it anew. There's a journey we must go on, and no more delay..." The Buried Giant begins as a couple set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen in years. Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in nearly a decade is about lost memories, love, revenge, and war.

Would you listen to The Buried Giant again? Why?
Absolutely.
What did you like best about this story?
The visual and ephemeral quality of the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Ah yes, the last part of the book.
Any additional comments?
This story has an everlasting quality. I have thought of it often, even dreamt of its world. I had listened to The Buried Giant over the Summer. It is now Winter moving into Spring and I still think of it, often.

“Are you there, Satan? It’s me, Madison,” declares the whip-tongued 13-year-old narrator of Damned, Chuck Palahniuk’s subversive new work of fiction. The daughter of a narcissistic film star and a billionaire, Madison is abandoned at her Swiss boarding school over Christmas, while her parents are off touting their new projects and adopting more orphans. She dies over the holiday of a marijuana overdose—and the next thing she knows, she’s in Hell.

This is not the voice I'd imagined. It just does not suit this character!
Would you be willing to try another one of Tai Sammons’s performances?
No!
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
yes
