Historia
Turning the other cheek does not mean standing by while the enemies of God dismantle Christian civilization and brainwash our children. Decrying the cowardice that masquerades as meekness, Eric Metaxas summons the Church to battle. An attenuated and unbiblical “faith” based on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace” has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of Americans. Paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism,” they shrink from combating the evils of our time. Metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes Christianity.

Excellent Treatise!
Revisado: 04-14-25
Eric Metaxis has written a phenomenal treatise on the ways in which the church and state should interact and it's not what the 'new' American, non-denominational church would tell have you believe.
There IS a separation of church and state and the separation is there is so to protect the church!
The author's arguments are sound and reasonable and should move anyone who reads with an open mind and a Christian perspective.
The only problem with the Audible book is that the author should not have read his own book. His reading was so stilted and so broken in cadence that it was almost impossible to listen to at some points. It would unquestionably serve readers to have a professional voice actor read the material and I'm disappointed that there either wasn't the budget for that, or the publisher, or author, eschewed that idea.
Again, the book was excellent, but I would buy the book and read it rather than listen to Metaxis read it.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Laughs, Tears and Much To Learn
Revisado: 03-31-25
Though I wouldn't recommend JD quit his day job to become a narrator, his writing is excellent. I didn't expect to hear so much research as is included in this book, but it provided the backdrop for his concerns and discussions on government policy based on the first-hand knowledge that so many of the researchers don't have - as he once specifically mentioned.
I also didn't expect to learn so much about my own life through his eyes, or have it make so many of my past familial experiences sensical to me. That JD was able to overcome such a desperately dysfunctional family speaks to at least one of his theses - he may not know how, or if, government fits into the equation that could solve the generally poor socioeconomic outcomes of children in these situations - he does know that caring family and/or friends made a HUGE difference to him and others.
This book should be read by every policy 'expert' in every level of government and those who CEO NPOs directed at poverty.
Beyond that, this was simply an excellent read I couldn't put down until I finished. Just an excellent book.

Historia
When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

Michael York's Reading Was Spellbinding and Astonishingly Good
Revisado: 05-08-24
Though it's still assigned reading in a few college Literature courses, this classic - now more a lesson in the prophetic skills of its author than any of its overall literary content - should be required reading for every college student.
Actor Michael York brings this book to full color life with his ability to act each character fully using different voices for each. The smooth tenor of his voice gives a seriousness to the text not provided by mere narration and I very nearly hung on every word.
Huxley's perception of what life will become once we finally give up all responsibility for our actions and surrender to the mind-numbing technology which prevents us from the sadness, frustrations and hardships of a life well-lived, is becoming all too realistic today. God, intellect, reason, righteousness, individuality - are all programmed necessities in humans. One can only hope that the reality presented in this book about what happens when those traits are denied, is absorbed into every pore of every reader until every human recognizes that no human should ever even consider living without them.

Historia
As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In this New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life—the theologian and the spy—and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

A Most Inspiring Book About A Most Inspiring Person
Revisado: 12-08-23
In these days of confusion, sadness and anger, Eric Metaxis' story of a person who rose against the embodiment of pure evil with pure good is a must read for anyone who yearns for purity of soul in a world that denounces purity daily. Here among the pages of this book is a human being whose life embodied the pinnacle of a Godly existence - one to whom every Christian should not only aspire, but actively reach to grasp in their every day lives. The world would be an entirely different place if the people who finish this book, didn't simply put it back up on the shelf, but began to live out the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer within their families, their communities and their churches, daily.
A well-written book about an earthly-bound, heavenly body, read by a man with a full, deep-throated voice who can pronounce difficult German as a native speaker and read each page with sufficient vocal inflection to keep the listener spell-bound to the story.

Historia
In February 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers in the Russian Ural Mountains died mysteriously on an elevation known as Dead Mountain. Eerie aspects of the incident—unexplained violent injuries, signs that they cut open and fled the tent without proper clothing or shoes, a strange final photograph taken by one of the hikers, and elevated levels of radiation found on some of their clothes—have led to decades of speculation over what really happened.

Great Story, Really Unpleasant Narration
Revisado: 10-11-20
Bless the author, his work on this piece was absolutely outstanding. To put in as much effort as he did to solve this mystery was nothing less than heroic. Unfortunately, he is not a voice actor and his narration is monotone, plodding and difficult to listen to - especially in the first part of the book where he records his early research - quite a bit of which was academic and very hard to concentrate on in droning voice. There was considerable action at the end, yet the emotional momentum was lost through his performance (or lack of it). The story itself is phenomenally interesting and listening to the way in which the mystery was solved so very understandable and interesting. Rather than listening to this story then, I would buy the book and read it for yourself, solving the only real problem with this book - the narration.

Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Not Science Fiction, Prognostication
Revisado: 05-05-20
When we quit assigning classic literature in public schools, we doomed ourselves to the idea that humanity knows best and through technology we will rise. This book understands that the best of human nature is only accessible through quiet reflection of literature (and art) excellent enough to stimulate the mind toward rational thought, not mind numbing electronic entertainment that serves to disquiet the mind and disrupt deep thinking. Unfortunately, Mr. Bradbury, in his immense understanding of human nature, hasn't painted a pretty picture for those of us outside the hive, yet we should strive to do what we can to bring its message to bear on a population largely unable to decode its meaning for themselves.
Tim Robbins does nothing less than a stellar job bringing the characters to life and making the listing time fly by.

Historia
First published in monthly parts from March 1852 to September 1853, this novel follows the fortunes of three pedestrian characters; Esther Summerson, Ada Clare, and Richard Carstone. The story they tell embondies Dickens' merciless indictment of the Court of Chancery and its bungling, morally corrupt handling of the endless case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, giving the novel its scope and meaning.

just wonderful
Revisado: 03-13-19
Though Dickens is often verbose and can tend to meander a bit more than even the most focused reader would like, I'm never disappointed in his ability to tell a wonderful, story of love and lessons and life that make me both cry and laugh heartily. Such is Bleak House. As well, Simon Vance has yet to provide any other than the most enjoyable listening experience as he expertly inflects, what are to many, mere one dimensional words on a page. Thank you Mr. Vance for sharing your talents with someone who yearns for truly lovely literature in a very depressing and backward age.

Historia
Most people have heard of the Celts - the elusive, ancient tribal people who resided in present-day England, Ireland, Scotland and France. Paradoxically characterized as both barbaric and innocent, the Celts appeal to the modern world as a symbol of a bygone era, a world destroyed by the ambition of empire and the spread of Christianity throughout Western Europe. Despite the pervasive cultural and literary influence of the Celts, shockingly little is known of their way of life and beliefs, because very few records of their stories exist.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Historia
A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old Devil to his nephew, Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.

Simply Prophetic
Revisado: 09-14-16
Not that those who truly need to read this book would venture even the attempt, but those who choose to endeavor will find, in hindsight of time, that Lewis was at once prophet and saint. His words caused me to continually call into question my Christianity and look with a more critical eye at not only my thoughts, but their source and not only my actions, but how I allow them to be influenced by those around me. His postscripted treatise (letter) on Democracy hit the bullseye so fully, I nearly burst into tears more than once at the mirrored nature of events in current time Lewis so obviously preordained observing his present. The Screwtape Letters is a must for any Christian and Lewis' postscript required reading for any government official.
