Book is ok, meant to be a very detailed theory
Revisado: 01-19-23
The story itself was ok, but it was a bit difficult keeping up with the sheer amount of interweaving detail. If you allow your mind to wander for even a few seconds, you're going to miss some detail(s) that will cause another detail to not make sense. Overall, an interesting thought experiment on what would be one of the most prolific serial killers since humans began walking the earth! 🔪🌍
A big issue I had with the book was the recording of it... there are several sections that skip portions of the story, as if it were a record that skips after someone bumps into the table holding the record player.
@ 5:55 of Chapter 46 is a good example of this. There were a few skips where I thought I had just misheard, but this one was much more noticeable, so I decided to point this one out. It skips from "the little girl was missing from school on Monday, then Tuesday, then..." all the way to the description of the bodies that are found sometime in the future. I have no way of knowing if I missed 6 seconds or 6 minutes of the story. That was the most frustrating thing about this particular audio book.

I start all of my true crime books with a quick word of warning. Most news articles and television true crime shows skim over the vile details of truly horrible crimes. In my books, I don’t gloss over the facts, regardless of how disgusting they may be. I try to give my listeners a clear and accurate description on just how demented the killers really were. I do my best not to leave anything out. The stories included in these books are not for the squeamish.

Worst piece of writing/reading EVER
Revisado: 01-15-23
These books HAVE to be self published because I just can't see any reputable publisher putting their name on this mess!! The constant mispronunciation of really simple words... the river "Thames", mixing up the words "windy" and "winding", being found guilty on multiple "accounts" instead of "counts", etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.! Has this guy ever heard of proof reading?! Either the writer or the illiterate narrator should definitely find another profession! Listening to this was like reading an essay by someone who speaks English as a 3rd or 4th language. The amount of cringe that I got for my 1 credit was unbearable!!
I simply can't believe this made it all the way to Audible with the included mistakes, misspellings, mispronunciation, etc.!!!!

David Brown was the consummate entrepreneur: a computer wizard and millionaire by age thirty-two. When his beautiful young wife was shot to death as she slept, Brown's fourteen-year-old daughter, Cinnamon, confessed to killing her stepmother. The California courts sentenced her harshly: twenty-four years to life. But in the wake of Cinnamon's murder conviction, thanks in part to two determined lawmen, the twisted private world of David Brown himself unfolded with astonishing clarity—revealing a trail of perverse love, twisted secrets, and evil mind games.

Incredible story!
Revisado: 01-14-23
This is one of the craziest true crime stories I've ever heard! It's quite easy to look up the photos and Facebook profiles of the people contained in the story, as well. The book itself was pretty good as was the narration... right up until the last couple of paragraphs where she started describing the "ghost" she saw in the window of the house where this all took place!! That was ridiculous and such a strange/terrible way to end a true crime book!

A different writing style than I've seen before

First, as others have mentioned, having a British narrator was a bit bizarre. Because it's an audio book, your brain typically creates it's own visual version of the story it's hearing... making up what it thinks the victim might look like, the perpetrator, the crime scene, etc., etc., especially if it's a story/persons/places you've never heard of/seen before. Having said that, all I could picture was the crime scene in some bungalow type house somewhere on the outskirts of London. lol Crazy, I know, but it's the risk you run when choosing a British guy to narrate a story that took place in California!
Secondly, and even stranger than asking a British guy to narrate your book, the author thought it would be a good idea to reveal the outcomes, the mindset of detectives & prosecutors, the motive of the murderer(s), etc., in the first couple of chapters in the book! After listening to the first 3-4 chapters, I already knew that she would be on trial, she would be found guilty, the arguments that would be made by prosecutors, the opinions of the detectives at the time of her arrest, etc., etc. This is even before I knew anything about the crime itself, the victim, the perpetrator, etc! I now own countless books on Audible, all of which are of the "true crime" genre and I've never heard an author let go of so much information right at the beginning of the story! Unfortunately, the decision to write the story this way made me very uninterested in the rest of the book. (I listened to the whole thing because these credits are expensive, but still....)

Good story, but...
Revisado: 03-19-22
This was a great story, one I had never heard of before, so I got to experience the excitement of discovering who the killer(s) were near the end of the book. It was like watching a movie for the first time without having read the spoilers online beforehand! Having said that, there was one issue that made the book hard to finish... non-stop, incessant religion!
I understand the need to explain someone's background, mental status, etc., when writing a book about the real life events of these people, but this book was obviously and annoyingly padded with endless explanations of people's religious preferences, church attendance, praying, opinions/examples of their "evil" deeds, etc., etc., etc., etc.!! We get it... people back then were extremely gullible & easily duped into believing such nonsense, but why the constant description of which fairytales they subscribed to?? It got real old real quick.

The true story of Barbara Stager, a devoted mother, loving wife, and dedicated church leader who committed an almost perfect crime. By all accounts, Stager seemed to lead the perfect life in her community in Durham, North Carolina. After her husband, popular high school coach Russ, died tragically, the police were inclined to believe her story - that she accidentally shot him. Suspicions rose when the police discovered that Stager's previous husband had died similarly 10 years prior.

Another book chock full of religious nonsense
Revisado: 10-23-21
I just can't understand why the facts of a crime, the backgrounds of the victim/perpetrator, etc., etc., just aren't enough. 98% of the true crime books I've heard on this app have been excessively padded with one type of religious nonsense or another. Not everyone is gullible enough to believe in non-existent magic sky fairies, so putting that all throughout the book is like talking about the Nicole Simpson murder while sprinkling in quotes from Harry Potter... it just doesn't make sense to ruin a story like that!

Blood in the Soil is the first book about the investigation into the shooting of Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt and his country attorney in Gwinnett County, Georgia, in 1978. But this book is not primarily about Larry Flynt, or even his shooter (the serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin), though both men are of course important characters in the story. This true account is told alternately from the perspective of Detective J. Michael Cowart and by following Franklin's life from childhood through his execution.

Not a very good book... and even worse narration!
Revisado: 02-20-21
It was EXTREMELY difficult to get past the terrible, intentionally over-dramatic voice of this narrator! His voice is like someone you'd hear on a t.v. commercial, but one that you're really glad only lasts 20 seconds! Hopefully no other books on Audible have the misfortune of being tethered to this guys forcefully lie pitched voice.
Anyways, the book was full of unnecessary over-dramatizations and it just wasn't for me. Maybe you can tolerate it better than I could. Good luck! 👍

Would've been a good book, but...
Revisado: 02-13-21
The story itself would have been interesting, but like most of the true crime books I've listened to on audible, it is chock full religious nonsense that is completely superfluous. Hearing all about the proud gullibility of the books characters doesn't add anything to the book. In fact, it makes it cringe worthy and nearly unreadable! Nobody cares about these people's beliefs in a magic sky fairy, especially one that they thing watches out for them, while at the exact same time allows their loved ones to be slaughtered, raped, molested, abused, etc., etc.... it's just flat out embarrassing at this point!

Early one morning in May, 1997, a young couple in the mountains of Colorado spotted a man dragging a body up a secluded trail. The man fled, leaving behind a bloody, dying woman. The investigation into the death of young street-walker Anita Paley would lead from that idyllic spot to the seamy underbelly of Denver and a world of prostitution, drug dealers, and violent criminals. And it would expose the lives of suspect Robert Riggan and Anita's friend Joanne Cordova, a former cop-turned-crack-addict and hooker.

Revisado: 02-09-21
I've always enjoyed this narrator, but this story was just more boring than most of the other books I've listened to an Audible. I was constantly rewinding the story because my mind would wander on to other thoughts and was just really difficult to get through.

Yet another book of superfluous religion packed in
Revisado: 01-18-21
Normally these would be well written, informative, and captivating books. Unfortunately, this is just another book packed with FAR too much religion! There's absolutely no reason to include so many gods, demons, spirits, ghosts, etc., into a book, especially since no such things exist! Somehow Ann Rule finds every single religious murder victim/family member in the country! There's no way that she can say that every single person in every single book she writes prays as much as she says they do!
After having listened to a few of her books, I can no longer handle the superfluous religious references sure packs into her books!
It's already ridiculous that in this day in age, people still believe such nonsense, but for these people to not even recognize the irony in the fact that the very same magic sky fairy they're asking for favors is the very same magic sky fairy that allowed their family member to be slaughtered in the first place is just too ridiculous!!
