Mr Immerwahr provides a compelling history of The Untied States' overseas Trusts and Territories. I found his one sided liberal approach at least consistent throughout the book and, not amusingly, every chance he could to slam Trump or Republicans generally unnecessary to the narrative of perceived massive transgressions against our overseas "empire". The worst aspect of the Audiobook though, was Luis Moreno's narration. It was dripping with sarcasm, innuendo, and snark and I found myself hardly able to continue. It was like listening to propaganda not a history book. Nonetheless, I finished the book because of my fascination since childhood of our overseas Territories. I found his coverage of the Philippine Islands to be in depth, fascinating, and shocking too. Americans need to know of our 15 year war with the Philippine people at the turn of the 20th Century. IN addition, his descriptions of the Death of Manila on the order of Warsaw, Berlin, and even Stalingrad helps the reader understand the horrors War places on civilians and military personnel. It bothered me that he singled out details of our military personnel transgressions while barely mentioning Japanese atrocities gives the Reader an idea of his intent. He did not succeed in making me despise the US but, not for lack of trying.

This book is very well read. Not overly dramatic just clean and purposeful. It’s a great story. The back stories of all the resistance men and women of occupied Europe, Asia, and Russia are where the real heart, bravery, and cruelty of WW 2 are written. This is one of those. Meyerowitz doesn’t endlessly dwell on the Jewish experience but subtely reminds us that their plight was profoundly scary. I love the credit he gives to the countless Frenchmen and Frenchwomen who assisted the Seargent in his tedious and harrowing passage to Gibraltar and how blessed the Allies were to have that Mediterranean anchor. America wouldn’t exist without French help and we tried our darnedest to repay them 170 years later.

American History that every American should know

Firstly, Robertson Dean has a voice and style that is perfect for any history selection but really helped, in my mind, weave an incredibly complex tale. However, the names and places are hard to look up to study further without the print copy, despite excellent practiced pronunciations. Still, New World History after the onslaught of Post Columbian Europeans and Africans is the most stunning change in human existence certainly ever recorded. Mr Mann brings this change to every corner of the World in detailed personal examples without judgement or moral essay and superb citation giving it a scholarly presence for which he has a gift. I liked 1491 but I loved this book. It would be an amazing thing to have dinner and a bottle of wine with Mr Mann. Every American should read this book to truly understand our hemisphere North and South. Because the tide of human, animal, and plant exchange will NOT be denied.

Excellent Review of the Bill of Rights

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

Mr Miniter gives a frank discussion of the Colonial and British Empire background for the formation of the Bill of Rights including historical citations and letters leading to its formation as written. He brings to the forefront of this discussion how carefully and thoughtfully was the exact wording chosen.

Which scene was your favorite?

The closing reading of the Bill of Rights verbatim.

If you could give Saving the Bill of Rights a new subtitle, what would it be?

Personal freedoms always trump the right of governments to make rules which seek to empower the government at the expense of diminishing those freedoms.

Any additional comments?

It is always difficult to correlate modern social discourse about rights and freedoms in a rapidly evolving world.

Couldn't stop listening to this book. Such a candid engrossing description of an amazing American. I really enjoyed the countless quotations of letters and correspondence lending remarkable insight to so many characters and places. A complex man with enough demons to make him believable. So glad I found it.
