feels like a video game

When you can’t die, it takes the bite and fear out of a story. And the whole, I just leveled and I now have new abilities. I should reach my next level in about two weeks.
if I don’t like the main character, it’s hard for me to like the book. Bastions quest for all out power regardless of cost is so anti-hero that I just couldn’t like him. And the fact that somehow only his interest is what matters to himself and his friends, and they literally were giving up things just so Bastin can push ahead to get his powers and level up further. his companions didn’t have any interest or stories of their own that were worth anything. It’s just hard for me to read a book where the character is so selfish and self-centered and the authors attempt to offset that with little subplots, where bastion questions his goals, does not help.
Nick was great as usual !

Loved it!
Revisado: 06-12-23
Narrator is waaaaay to dramatic and the author likes big words no one ever uses, but the story was amazing! If you do not like a lot of detail, like describing the shades of green on a blade of grass, this may not be your cup o’ tea. The story starts off a little slow, well a lot slow, but if you hold out you will be re warded with one of the best stories ever written. Sits up on my mental shelf with JRR Tolkien. I know the story is dramatic but I felt that the narrator did it an injustice by trying to wring every nuance of emotion out of every word written, sometimes you need to let it breath a little. That’s my two pence.

Not horrible, not great

Started out OK, Got a little cringy when the author started pushing his political views about women in a fantasy story. The main character has magic, but it really can’t do a whole lot. I just didn’t find any depth to the story. Will not get the next book.

Great 2nd book, main character lacking.
Revisado: 04-17-23
I really enjoy the story so far, the author does a great job at keeping the reader entertained, I look forward to the next book. Characters in the book do not have a lot of depth, but are still enjoyable. My only issue is with the main character who is so stuck on himself, the most handsome, the biggest muscle, the tallest, the only one who can do this, or the only one who can do that, Mr. perfect. all other characters seem to just be lucky to be in his presence. I don’t know if the author meant to make a character who can do no wrong, and loves himself. I guess the fact that he tries to mask this big ego character into a sheath of humility as if he actually cares just sits wrong with me. But if you can overlook the small character issue, the story is worth listening to in my opinion.

Good read, great performance.
Revisado: 07-30-21
I liked the first half, the second half left me frustrated with the hero.
I am not a fan of swearing in fantasy novels nor is incest appealing. The author uses the first to great effect with the grandpa character but when other characters spit out the “f” word it just sounds wrong. And the author plays around with the idea of incest with the main character and his sister, luckily he doesn’t follow through or I wouldn’t have made it through the whole book.
Also the main character is far from humble and constantly goes after the “evil” guys while the whole time acting evil himself. He is every fathers nightmare son in law and just rubbed me the wrong way with his ego and brashness and attitude toward parents and people older than himself.
However all that being said I listened to the end, so Kudos to the performance by Tim . I would recommend with warnings to older teens and adults.

Not bad, not great
Revisado: 11-20-18
I like the story, and it has great potential, But seems to run on a little too much for me. Also it’s a little too merchandised in that each book is about 12 hours long so you’re forced to buy each small book to get to the end of the story where they could’ve put it in just two or three books.
The main character is just kind of blah he’s kind of good with a sword he could possibly do magic if the author whatever do anything with that part of the story so he’s just a normal guy in a group of extraordinary people. I keep waiting for him to show some kind of awesome something… But here In the fourth Book He still is just a guy with a sword with no real special ability, I don’t think he’s going to do anything special through the series so I don’t know if I’m going to purchase the Fifth book.
I like some of the secondary characters in the story like i said has potential but just doesn’t seem to go anywhere.
It’s not all bad I actually like some of the action scenes but details are missing in the rest of the story.
The performances pretty good overall and the book is worth reading if you have the time and you don’t have something better to read.

Historia
For those who reside in the outer regions of Aleria, the day of bestowal is what determines their destiny. It is the holy day of the Goddess. The day that allows those of age to step forward and receive their blessing, to embark on the path that she has chosen for them. To receive their Classification, which dictates their strength and ability. For those people, the holy day of bestowal represents fate itself. For Dante, it represents salvation.

Revisado: 10-23-18
I bought this book thinking it was A normal fantasy novel. I was irritated as I listened and realized it was a video game transformed into an audiobook. I feel that they should put these books in their own completely different genre for teenagers you can’t get enough gaming.
The story Is actually pretty good if you can just get your head around that somehow a computer Gaming menu just somehow appears with nerdy Statistics i.e. level III Mana speed 3.79 Etc. in the book and story.
Every time I would start getting into the story Dante would stop and check his world energy menu to check his stats to see if he is leveled up Which was really annoying and didn’t even need to be in the story. I really felt he could just remove all their game reference speak and type a story together and make a decent audiobook.
But I guess there’s some people who This kind of thing, that’s fine, I just wish all these types of titles had a blaring And very distinguishable way of identifying these books right from Audible’s recommended title selection.
And although the story was OK, and drew me in sometimes, The constant killing for no reason just left a bad taste in my mouth. In a game when a character dies he’ll respawn and lose some experience or levels or if it’s a monster they respawn after so many hours, so killing different people monsters isn’t again and I’m sure gives most players reasons to go out and kill more people in Monsters. But in a story or a book where the characters in monsters die and die for good, it just is weird When the main character acts like he has a conscience and morals, but Has no problem killing anyone and everyone that will help him level up including the guy begging for his life who had a pregnant wife. I know he put this in here for shock value but it just wasn’t done well and it just doesn’t help the story. I keep waiting for the guy to be somewhat of a hero or anti-hero but get let down every time he kills someone for no reason. Which I would expect in a book about a killer or an assassin or even a dark type of novel but this novel wasn’t advertised as any of those so it just wasn’t very readable to me for those reasons. I felt I was reading a teenager’s idea of how the world works put into an Imaginary story. I Kept thinking I hope I never meet the author, As he probably thinks he could get experience for killing anyone in his path.
If you like this type of story and type of “book “then you’ll love it I am sure. But if you’re looking for a story that leaves you feeling excited for the next book and fulfilled this probably won’t do it for you.

Predictable Trodden on Wimpy Assasins Unite
Revisado: 02-01-13
Would you try another book from Robin Hobb and/or Paul Boehmer?
Maybe if I was in the mood for an energy draining, pain inflicting, experience. An experience that left me with the feeling of... hmmm the hero could have been my next door neighbor only more predictable, less heroic, and fully miserable all the time. If you were given a super power would you just "kind of use it". No one else could do this special thing but you have the power but no inclination? I had a hard time with some of the "Human" traits brought out in the characters. But I liked the book to continue reading it through to the end. This was my first time reading a Robin Hobb story, I don't know anything about the author or his other works. I did like some of his writing style, and may read something in the future as some authors change their style and mood between works.
Has Royal Assassin turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, of course not. Although the trend, for the last decade in movies and books has been to take joy out of the story, any story, and replace it with 'Real' practical experiences, misery and anti-climatic endings. This story was no different. I have hope though, that some epic fantasy authors will try something different... maybe a happy ending filled with magic and joy, something that leaves the reader with a feeling that by reading the book, it has somehow fundamentally changed the way the reader wants to live their life. Makes the reader want to be better. Breath of fresh air. This was not that book.
What about Paul Boehmer’s performance did you like?
At first no, but he grew on me. His voice is very light and doesn't resonate very well, however he is technically a master. His tones and delivery are excellent. At one point I was so disgusted with the story, that I wasn't sure why I was still listening. I determined that is was Paul voice and delivery. Although Robin's story was kind of dark and dreary, Paul's voice was the light, and filled me with a kind of hope, that kept me moving through endless awkward predicaments.
Did Royal Assassin inspire you to do anything?
Yes, the hole left in my foot by the nail I drove through it, is healing well. Luckily the Elf Bark tea has blocked all thoughts about my reading experience.
Any additional comments?
If your not into animal stories, or human/animal relationships you may want to stay away from this series. Although the title says assassin, and makes you think of castles, a lot of the book revolves around animals in great detail to the point where I wondered why it wasn't called wolf prince or the like. However if you love animals and animal behavior and relationships, you will probably love this trilogy.
