Historia
Occult Feminism: The Secret History of Women's Liberation dives deep into the occult roots of the movement, detailing the lives of some of its most prominent figures and the esoteric beliefs that inspired and motivated them. Since the 1970s, everything we learn about the history of the women's movement has been subject to gatekeeping by radicals who run women's studies departments in universities. But there's an entire history that has been obscured from public view.

Thoroughly interesting, delivered terribly.
Revisado: 04-18-25
The content is rigorous, well researched, and thought provoking. The authors personal notes and thoughts reflected at times detract from the delivery, perhaps even harming its appearance of credibility. Overall it is extremely intriguing and worthwhile to read, emphasis on read. The real problem is the narration. Rampant mispronounciation, odd sentence structure and cadence, and worst of all is the all around poor quality of the recording. What sounds like a mouse click is persistently audible throughout, and the microphone used sounds like a can tied to a string. I primarily listen to books while driving, and my vehicle stereo experience was awful, the volume isn't even consistent. Should the book ever be re-recorded, I'd recommend it to anyone. As it is, I still recommend it, just in physical book form.

Historia
This epic novel by master writer James Clavell, loosely based on the Namamugi Incident and Anglo-Satsuma War that took place in the late 1800s, is a richly researched, panoramic view of Japan’s budding relationship with the Western powers, its sweeping societal changes, and the political upheaval that followed.

Intriguing as ever, Clavell still holds my interest. I do feel Tai Pan is a better novel, but the sequel was worth the listen. Reader has excellent range, solid cadence, and sound pronunciation. Would recommend.

Historia
Dirk Struan rose from humble beginnings to build Struan & Company, also known as the Noble House, into the world’s largest Far East trading company. He is now the Tai-Pan—Supreme Leader—of all Tai-Pans in China. Along the way, however, he made a powerful enemy. Tyler Brock, Struan’s rival from their early opium-smuggling days, also heads a large trading fleet, second in size only to Struan’s. But it is not only silks and spices that drive their mutual companies’ wealth—the opium trade is still booming.

I thought surely Clavell couldn't top the intrigue and rich detail of Shogun, but I'm very glad to report Tai-Pan is just as good! Thoroughly enjoyable, and heartily recommended.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author Eric Flint has received glowing critical praise for his Ring of Fire alternate history series. In this first installment, a West Virginia town is transported from the year 2000 to 1631 Germany at the height of the Thirty Years’ War. Thrust into conflict, the town residents must also contend with moral issues such as who should be considered a citizen.

Great premise, bad execution.
Revisado: 08-23-24
A superb start, thoroughly competent narration. All culminating in what amounts to YA level leftist fantasy. The interesting characters at the start quickly become one dimensional, before being replaced altogether by truly Mary-Sue level backups. The compelling logistical problems presented by the events at the beginning and hardly discussed, and wholly worked through in the background with little fanfare or difficulty. Despite being written over 20 years ago, it bears remarkable similarity to the kind of leftist writing you'd expect to make up a modern Amazon MGM production. Squandered opportunity, clearly enjoyable enough to warrant several sequels to some, however I don't think I'll be continuing beyond the first.

I look forward to more.
Revisado: 08-16-24
I feel this is the weakest of the series to date. The performance has the usual issues. Mispronounciation, repeated lines, and a few sections where the recording must have been done in different locations. The developments weren't uninteresting, just seems like some of the momentum of the earlier books was waning. I remain excited for more, and overall it was still enjoyable.

Historia
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Upon finishing Enders Game, I thought it a crime I'd never experienced it as a child or even a young adult. However, I'm grateful for the opportunity to have that first experience now. All the more after listening to Speaker for the Dead. The performance marvelously captures the story, and the material is sublime. It will go down as one of my favorites, and I now envy those who get to hear it for the first time. Couldn't recommend enough.

Newmerica was forged out of a violent coup that superimposed a socialist state over what had been the United States of America. For five years into their rule, the progressives have had their way in dismantling every aspect of American life. Out of the shadows, a new American president has been sworn in, threatening their grip on the nation. The Newmericans are unwilling to turn over the reins of power setting the stage for a conflict unlike any other.

The second in the series doesn't disappoint. Thoroughly engaging and entertaining. However, the narration once again fails to deliver. While possessing an easy to listen to, radio-like tone. The frequency of mispronounced words and emotionless delivery do not favor the text. I still recommend it, albeit while wishing for another rendition.
