Historia
Delicious staples of a great meal, bread, cheese, and wine develop their complex flavors through a process known as fermentation. Katie Quinn spent months as an apprentice with some of Europe’s most acclaimed experts to study the art and science of fermentation. Visiting grain fields, vineyards, and dairies, Katie brings the stories and science of these foods to the table, explains the process of each craft, and introduces the people behind them.

Happy I listened.
Revisado: 12-06-24
Normally I don't like books that lean hard into personal accounts when discussing scientific topics but this book balances short but apt personal stories with information well. The reader, who is also the author, imbues the book with an infectious interest that keeps the science from being boring and difficult to follow. The science is less about the chemical breakdowns and more about how slight changes in variables; time, temperature, and ingredients can change the flavors drastically. The book also covers history briefly to explain the reasons behind names, processes, ingredients, certifications, designations, and significance.
The accompanying PDF has recipes, lists, and illustrated instructions for dishes and a couple fermentation projects.
You get a listening experience and a short cookbook.

Creative, funny, and as mad as a box of flamingos.
Revisado: 03-20-24
I've been a fan of Buckley's since reading the Sisters Grimm series so I gave this a listen while working and it made my day. It's filled with some dry and light dark humor. Kate Winslet's voice acting is fun and engaging, and if you're familiar with her filmography there's a few lines I'm certain had to have been written after she signed on. It's a quick listen, I'd have gladly listened to a few more hours.

Historia
The year was 1917. As a war raged across the world, young American women flocked to work, painting watches, clocks, and military dials with a special luminous substance made from radium. It was a fun job, lucrative and glamorous - the girls themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered head to toe in the dust from the paint. They were the radium girls. As the years passed, the women began to suffer from mysterious and crippling illnesses.

A glowing reminder.
Revisado: 03-18-24
This book stays with you much like a ghost, haunting your thoughts long after. The only gift anyone can give the dial painters bow, is knowing who these women were, how much they lived for, and most brutally who and what killed them. We can't give them back their lost time but we can remember them for the time they did have.
I will say the voice artist at regular speed was fairly slow. It's a somber book so it makes sense in a way but I prefer a faster pace. I've seen other complaints about it but putting it on 2x speed resolved any issue I might have had.

This book went beyond Rand's influence on the Bioshock series and touched on many forms of philosophy, government, and the charactere.
