Just absolutely Terrible
Revisado: 03-06-23
I thought the last book was bad, but this one was worse... it is like the writer just gives up and leaves it up to the reader to figure out what happened. The forced female character is bad enough to make this not readable, but the pushing of her "badassness" is stomach churning.... I tried to push through but stopped reading with only 6 minutes left it was so bad... I didn't need to hear how it ended... it was that bad. I will not be reading anymore of this series. Too bad.. the guy that wrote it is a badass. Too bad he couldn't have transferred that in the books. Terri writing

Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

Depressing AF!
Revisado: 03-31-22
The book is very well written, and the reading of it is fantastic. You can completely get lost in the story. The author has a very Ernest Hemingway feel, great writing, but the storyline is very depressing! Just when you think one of the characters is going to have something good happen to them, BOOM just about the worst thing that could happens. Every character has a terrible ending, and there is NO closure to any of the storylines. I am depressed AF now that it is over.

cliché after cliché
Revisado: 10-10-21
It was not a terrible story over all. The problem was it was predictable to the highest level and was a cliche page after page. It was like a city kid read one western book and tried to write his own story, not knowing anything about life on the western plains. I wouldn't recommend it to a friend, but I also wouldn't tell anyone not to read it. It just isn't the best story to read if your used to Louis L'Amour books....

narrator was great!
Revisado: 06-19-21
I almost didn't buy this one due to all the bad reviews about the narrator being bad. Glad I did, this is the same guy that has narrated a couple other ones. I think he was great. These books are so good! I am amazed that a man can come up with these story lines. I am writing a book now and hope that mine is HALF as good as Tom's books... although mine is a western. loved this book!!!!

politics aside, great story!
Revisado: 04-25-21
This book was an absolute beast! Great story, great in every way possible. The only bad thing was the unnecessary added part about the COVID-19 aspect, to include belittling the President (Trump) and calling him a liar. I get it, he is hated, but I purposely don't watch political shows under the guise of a news show. Didn't like that this author took his oputunity to add politics in a book that is not about politics. I wouldn't have read a book about politics... anyway, it was a very small part and didn't ruin the story in anyway. It was just unneeded. I hate politics. Families and friends are being split due to false narrative pushed by "news" shows like Fox and CNN. I don't need it in a book I buy.

I got to about 1/4 through it and just deleted it from my device... First book by this author I wasn't hooked on by the 3rd chapter. weak story line, slow entry, not interesting at all... wish I could switch it for another book since I will never be finishing it.

Voice was TERRIBLE!
Revisado: 11-05-20
The narrator's voice is a really nice voice to listen to if it was an autobiography, but should be limited to books that don't require multiple characters. He was bland and made all characters have the same voice, it was confusing and quit often I would have to go back to re-listen to a part of the story because I was confused as to who was speaking. His dramatic voice to show excitement was terrible.... I really liked the story but I don't think I will buy the next one in the series from here because I don't think I could take listening to his voice for 13 more hours. I will have to buy the paper copy and read it myself. If somebody listened to this book as their first audiobook, I believe you would lose that customer for good. It was not a good purchase. In fact I may buy the paper copy of this too and re-read it..... Just terrible voice for this type of story. I have every other book by these authors that is available and highly suggest anyone reading this to take a look at the "People of" series. Amazing storylines!

Depressing and Disappointing yet Beautifully written!
Revisado: 04-05-20
If you start to like a character, don’t. They either die, have something terrible happen to them, or the writer changes the view and you hate them. It starts from the first page, just down right depressing event after event. He adds just a enough to keep you reading, but I did stop reading the book 3 times with the intent not to finish. However I am in the desert in the Middle East and couldn’t get anything else at times so I pushed through. There is a VERY weak attempt to wrap up the story in the end as “a happy ending” but even it is clouded by a dark depressing event. The one thing I will say is, the author is a very talented writer! Reminds me of Louis l’Amour for sure. I just didn’t care for the story itself. Almost had a Ernest Hemingway feel to it. I will look up this author again and buy another book if he has any, with hopes that it is not as dark.
