I know a lot of people have difficulty sympathizing with a prince, but I found his story credible and honest. I think it took courage to put it all out there and I'm glad he did. I thoroughly enjoyed the book -- and the narration is excellent! Congratulations Harry and Meghan and thank you for sharing your story.

This book dragged on forever. Plot was contrived. Too much gratuitous violence. Narration was good, but not good enough to compensate for the tiresome story. Disappointing overall.

Would you consider the audio edition of A God in Ruins to be better than the print version?

Absolutely. I found myself feeling a bit sorry for readers deprived of Mr. Jennings' performance. It is nothing short of wonderful.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the flow of this book. The listener is taken on an unpredictable path through space and time yet somehow it feels like a stream, or a winding road, that has a beginning and an end. The book is beautifully written and the narrator gives a nuanced performance of every character no matter how minor or brief the encounter.

What does Alex Jennings bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I'm sure I would've enjoyed the work if I read it, but Alex Jennings bought it to another level for me. His ability to communicate subtleties of attitude, age, class, personality, nationality, etc., of each character added dimension that would otherwise have been missed.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several but I think Viola's attempt at reconciliation with her son was particularly poignant.

Any additional comments?

I would rank this audiobook among my top 10 favorites.

Gives New Meaning to Painful Commute

This book really got under my skin. It centers on three young women struggling to keep their once "perfect" lives from crumbling. The listener is given an intimate glimpse into their fears, insecurities, and moral failings as they deal with their unfolding nightmares. The problem is: not one of their stories is completely reliable and this is where the narration really bring this thriller to life.

The story opens with Rachel, a recently-sacked, divorced, and thoroughly depressed woman who rides a commuter train to London so her roommate doesn't discover that she's unemployed. As the train passes through the lovely suburban neighborhood in which she once lived with her handsome, successful husband, she is tormented by all that has gone terribly wrong in her life. She blunts the pain with wine and cans of gin&tonic and becomes obsessed with the seemingly idyllic lives of those around her -- until she sees something from the train window that really takes her on a wild ride!

The story takes many twists and turns, and you may find yourself wincing as Rachel's life gets dangerously close to rock bottom, but hang in there, because the plot does pay off!

Sutter is deep, shallow, and charming at the same.

Sutter is a high school senior who is wise beyond his years. He is heroic in many ways, but tragic in even more ways. His compulsion to pursue a good buzz and a good time prevents him from making the deep and lasting relationships that he yearns for. He knows that to love and be loved is what's really important in life but that would require him to have a sense of the future. The present is the only thing that has any real meaning for Sutter and he fears that he will never be worthy of the love he desperately seeks.

I really enjoyed this book. The plot is complicated, the stories are rich, and the characters are a bit surreal. There are also some very funny moments (soliloquies from Richard Burton, no less) and the narration is exceptional. The story begins in Italy. It's the Hollywood heyday of the early 60's with its bigger-than-life American glamour and epic romances (Liz and Dick). A beautiful and mysterious woman arrives at a seaside village and the story unfolds. Then, just as you're getting comfortable here, the story does a flash forward to the not-so-glamorous present day Hollywood. Somehow, the author weaves these and other places, times, and people together to create rich, wonderful stories about life, love and happiness. I'd listen to this one again.
