Historia
If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

Daphne Bell believes the universe has a plan for her. Every time she meets a new man, she receives a slip of paper with his name and a number on it—the exact amount of time they will be together. The papers told her she’d spend three days with Martin in Paris; five weeks with Noah in San Francisco; and three months with Hugo, her ex-boyfriend turned best friend.

It got better by the end of the day but the story line took to long for the aha moment.

Suspenseful & heartwrenching. I enjoyed this story and how it sheds light on everyone as being flawed but still worthy.

Historia
For most of her eighty years, Mary Jackson has been waiting. As she’s endured the steady invasion of tourists, influencers and real estate developers who have discovered the lakeside charm of Good Hart, Michigan, she’s also patiently anticipated the arrival of a stranger she’s believed since childhood would one day carry on her legacy—the Very Cherry General Store. Like generations of Jackson women before her, Cherry Mary, as she’s known locally, runs the community hub.

DIDNT quite suck me in
Revisado: 11-10-23
I wanted to love this book. I really did. A friend recommended it and I usually have the same taste as she does. I liked the first chapter but just wasn’t able to connect with Mary or Becky.
I read quite a lot, so it makes me pickier. This was my 136th book this year. Most reads were more entertaining than this one.

Who is my son becoming—and what qualifies me to be his guide? What follows starts to feel like uncharted waters. Rape allegations rock the university campus where she teaches, unleashing questions of justice and accountability. Julavits begins to wonder how to prepare her son to be the best possible citizen of the world he’s about to enter. And what must she learn about herself in order to responsibly steer him.

Chaotic and hard to enjoy. It didn’t read as a Novel as much as like stream of consciousness entries.

The best part was the scenery descriptions of CA
Revisado: 07-09-23
Didn’t love this book. It felt scattered when I was hoping for more elaborate prose on gardens & plant life.
I did savor all the CA references as I’m a Northern California native.

Historia
Ever since she became a parent, Mary Louise Kelly has said “next year.” Next year will be the year she makes it to her son James’s soccer games (which are on weekdays at 4 p.m., right when she is on the air on NPR’s All Things Considered, talking to millions of listeners). Drive carpool for her son Alexander? Not if she wants to do that story about Ukraine and interview the secretary of state. Like millions of parents who wrestle with raising children while pursuing a career, she has never been cavalier about these decisions.

As a parent, and a professional that works in a children’s hospital and has many hard conversations, this book was a gift. I bookmarked so many paragraphs and words of wisdom.
So glad I listened to Kate Bowler’s podcast & found you!

Historia
Laurel Braitman spent her childhood learning from her dad how to out-fish grown men, keep bees, and fix carburetors. Diagnosed young with terminal cancer, he raced against the clock to leave her the skills she’d need to survive without him. This was one legacy. Another was relentless perfectionism and the belief that bravery meant never acknowledging your own fear. By her mid-thirties Laurel is a ship about to splinter on the rocks, having learned the hard way that no achievement can protect her from pain or remove the guilt and regret her dad’s death leaves her with.

What a beautiful tribute to life and love. I work in the hospital setting and do a lot of grief work at Stanford Children’s. This book was raw & real and I am so grateful for the wisdom I am taking away.

Not my favorite moyes book
Revisado: 03-10-23
This is the only book I haven’t loved by moyes. I’ll admit my expectations were high as most all of the books Ive read by her have been 5 sears. The story was ok but I wouldn’t recommend as she has much better stories out there. I think she’s much better writing historical fiction.
