Historia
The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady's maid, she can barely believe her luck. It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives - presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.

Bravura performance.
Revisado: 02-15-24
This mystery novel is written in the subjective first person feminine, a young girl with an inferiority complex. The narrator, Ms. Massey, brings the story alive beyond all expectations, deftly imitating all characters as seen through the eyes and ears of the innocent youngster.

Historia
Les Compagnons de Jehu (The Companions of Jehu) is set in the 1800s, during Napoleon's rise to power. The title refers to a secret organisation of young aristocrats-turned-highwaymen that continuously steals the money of the Directoire in order to finance the restoration of monarchy. It has all the typical Dumas ingredients, that is to say duels, political intrigues, noble heroes and a tragic love store that would make Shakespeare green with envy. Not to mention a hero with a murky past who you will love to hate.

Classis Dumas
Revisado: 09-01-23
A classic Dumas tale of honor, strife, intrigue, love, and politics in 1798 France. A waning band of underground royalist sympathizers spar with various antagonists as General Bonaparte rises to First Consul and conspires for more, all as a triangle love affair is born under a tragic star. The reader does an excellent job, in my view, of enunciating French words that so often bedevil English speakers.

A badly needed first-person, insider account...
Revisado: 11-14-21
Some of the negative reviews here prove the point that this book is a badly needed first-person, insider account of the real J. Edgar Hoover. Along with Hoover's FBI-The Inside Story by Hoover's Trusted Lieutenant, by Cartha D. DeLoach, The Director-My Years Assisting J. Edgar Hoover helps to set the record straight and separate fact from the often-outrageous fiction that has enveloped Hoover since his death. Hoover is revealed as a conservative perfectionist who made mistakes, but who turned the F.B.I. into the preeminent investigative agency in the world through tough standards and close management. It will come as sour news to Hoover-haters that, in large part, he protected the Bureau from forces both within and without which sought to mire the Bureau in sordid politics, and that the mistakes he made were influenced by his lifelong investigations of Soviet communism. Nor was he a crossdressing gay or racist.

Historia
Most of us have a limited understanding of the powerful role economics has played in shaping human civilization. This makes economic history - the study of how civilizations structured their environments to provide food, shelter, and material goods - a vital lens through which to think about how we arrived at our present, globalized moment. Designed to fill a long-empty gap in how we think about modern history, these 48 lectures are a comprehensive journey through more than 600 years of economic history.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
no.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The pitch of the work is elementary, college freshman at most. The Author suffers from an anti-European prejudice. E.g., China and India did not enter the industrial revolution when Europe did because their economic systems were more advanced and thus they didn't need it.

Historia
While the Civil War raged in America, another very different revolution was beginning to take shape across the Atlantic, in the studios of Paris. The artists who would make Impressionism the most popular art form in history were showing their first paintings amid scorn and derision from the French artistic establishment. Indeed, no artistic movement has ever been, at its inception, quite so controversial.

Subpar for Dumas, redeemed by Simon Vance.
Revisado: 01-21-10
As others have said, the velvet and lace romantic intrigues are subpar for Dumas, but the novel as a whole is redeemed by its enlargement and shading of the series' characters, insightful flourishes, and above all by the sublime performance of Simon Vance, who intones new meaning into otherwise hackneyed soap opera.

Historia
The Count of Monte Cristo is the tense and exciting story of Edmond Dantes, a man on the threshold of a bright career and a happy marriage, who is imprisoned in the island fortress of the Chateau d'If on a false political charge. After staging a dramatic escape, he finds the fabulous treasure of Monte Cristo, which makes him wealthy. He then sets upon the course of revenge against his old enemies.
The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the great thrillers of all time. In 1853 William Thackeray wrote to a friend: "began to read Monte Cristo at six one morning and never...

Fred Williams
Revisado: 10-14-05
I m surprised at the criticism of the reader. As a veteran of more than 20 years of book-on-tape, in my opinion, Fred Williams is one of the best, particularly in this genre of multiple languages and an objective-then-subjective author. Perhaps others are more taken with Hollywood melodrama and histrionics.
