I have been going back to it since the end of the 1990s, when Naxos put it out on CD.

I know some of the poems by heart now.

A true gem. Great voice actors.

I had already read the book, now I have listened to it.

It’s Michael Crichton at the top of his form, placing his characters in the ethical labyrinths of modern (here, biogenetic) science.

Michael Crichton again held me spellbound.

And in true Crichton fashion, the scientific “essays” included within the thriller structure are half the pleasure.

Morton’s (a character in the book) suggestions for improving scientific research are spot on.

Gerald Durrell’s books are a phenomenon that has been giving pure pleasure to people for more than half a century.
I grew up on them — my whole family grew up on them.
Here, in the Czech Republic, they are very popular, and we can enjoy them in excellent, loving “old-school” translations and in the original.
And these years, I can even listen to them unabridged!
Too wonderful.
Get all the Durrell books and treasure them for generations!

main currents of world history

What did you love best about A Brief History of the World?

It gives you a way of thinking about world history in an abstractly practical - or practically abstract - way.

It focuses on the main themes, forces, topics, currents shaping it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It's definitely not be listened to in a single sitting. Listen to one, two, three lectures a day.

Any additional comments?

I recommend it to anyone who wants to make sense of world history.

I heartily recommend it. The writing is very original and Brian Cox is superb, as always: I think John Aubrey himself could not have narrated it better. He captures the spirit of the writing. For me it's an all-time classic, and phrases and whole passages from this recording (which I first had as a CD from Naxos years ago) are my constant companions. But again, as I believe one reviewer has said, don't expect autobiographies: these are vignettes. But in terms of vignettes, I have never seen anything to compare with them.
