Historia
In 1979, the gruesome slaying of a thirteen-year-old boy riveted the suburbs of Suffolk County, New York. As the county hustled to bring the case to a dubious resolution, a wayward local teenager emerged with a convenient story to tell. For his cooperation, Jimmy Burke was rewarded with a job as a cop. Thus began Burke’s unlikely ascent to the top of one of the country’s largest law enforcement jurisdictions. He and a crew of likeminded allies utilized vengeance, gangster tactics, and political leverage to become the most powerful and feared figures in their suburban empire.

Great book about the extensive corruption on Long Island in Suffolk County.
Revisado: 04-22-25
This book shows how much damage one Psychopath in a top position can inflict. Suffolk County is on Long Island and has to be one of the most corrupt counties in America. With a corrupt DA and a Corrupt Police Chief working together, manipulating each other and everyone around them, the damage they did was unbelievable. The book is about a corrupt Police Chief, James Burke, and a corrupt DA, Thomas Spota but is about much more. The title really should have been changed to reflect this. It is about the long standing and pervasive corruption in the Long Island Police and DAs office that trickles down to every aspect of life there. Innocent people convicted of murder, drugs, sex, prostitution, padded expense accounts, exorbitant pensions after felony convictions, bribery, theft, phony police attorneys, corrupt police unions protecting corrupt cops, behind the scenes promotions of the worst of the worst, incompetence, and so many other crimes it is hard to list them all. I liked the book but think some of it could have been edited better to be more concise and chronological. The narrator was very good. Some of it was very well written and other parts not so much. It was like it was written by two different people. The author also misses the point that they were dealing with a classic psychopath in James Burke. Knowing this explains a lot. He is unredeemable and can never be fixed. He is an absolutely person and his prison sentence should have been ten times longer and not served in Allenwood which is considered a country club. I would highly recommend this book especially if you live or have lived on Long Island I did. Also watch the new Netflix Series about the Long Island Serial Killer called Gone Girls. It ties into all this and these corrupt characters are featured in some of it.

If you are from NY you will appreciate it more bc you will know all the locales and have seen all those garbage trucks everywhere. Fantastic story and that detective deserves so much credit. Almost more than Donny Brasco. It should be a movie for sure! Narration was excellent.

Extremely frightening true story. Chilling.
Revisado: 05-30-24
This book is very well written. I will not give anything of significance away here. I had never heard of this serial killer and decided to give it a listen. The narrator is excellent especially when she speaks in a man's voice. Frankly, there are a few passages that I wish I didn't hear. I almost can't get them out of my mind. I am incredulous at the things he is capable of. I looked up his appearance and you would never believe he is anything but a regular person. He could be sitting right next to you and you would probably strike up a pleasant conversation with him. The chapter where they went looking for him was very exciting. I was on the edge of my seat. If it weren't for some outstanding police work by the Anchorage Police, the FBI and a single Texas Ranger, named Rayburn, he wouldn't have been caught. Texas Ranger Rayburn, who received the BOLO, is a hero. If he didn't take his work seriously and ignored the requests to locate him this man he would have passed right through their town. No one any wiser. A special mention for the former Anchorage District Attorney is warranted. His name is Kevin R. Feldis. Despite no prior experience with serial killers or violent crimes he inserted himself into the FBI's and Anchorage Law enforcement's interrogations with the suspect. The author spends multiple chapters discussing this. It's like someone in the Little League insisting on batting in game seven of the World Series. An interview of this magnitude requires extreme skill, training and only the most qualified persons should be allowed to do them. Most of them have had years of special, high level training at FBI Headquarters in Quantico. The stakes are extreme. They are trying to find out if someone may still be alive and names of other victims to provide closure to the families. The author takes us through the interview transcripts highlighting DA Feldis's many mistakes. She suggests it was a vailed attempt at self promotion. There are many other fascinating chapters in this book. But I don't want to spoil it for any potential readers.
That being said, if this is the kind of thing you like I would highly recommend listening to this book.
