Historia
Already well-versed in the natural healing properties of herbs and oils, Jennie Pickett longs to become a doctor. But the Oregon frontier of the 1870s doesn't approve of such innovations as women attending medical school. To leave grief and guilt behind, as well as support herself and her challenging young son, Jennie cares for an elderly woman using skills she's developed on her own. When her patient dies, Jennie discovers that her heart has become entangled with the woman's widowed husband, a man many years her senior.

Historia
Growing up on their hardscrabble farm in rural Kentucky, 15-year-old Albertina "Bertie" Winslow has learned a lot from her mama, Polly. What she doesn't know, but is forced to reckon with all too soon, is how to look after children as a mother should. When Polly succumbs to a long illness, Bertie takes on responsibility for her four younger siblings and their dissolute, unreliable daddy.

Such a good book. I’m from Appalachia and could relate to so much of what Berta went through. And like her I’ve had trouble having children I could relate to so much. Narrator was great too.

I really enjoyed this series. I listened to them in order, and finished them all in two days. I am white but could relate to both sides wondering what I would do back then and how I would have lived. Narration was right on. Do yourself a favor and listen to these books.

I am from Detroit and was a 6 year old girl when the riots happened. All I remember was driving out of Detroit with my mom and 5 sisters and seeing the smoke. It was interesting to not only hear about the riots but also of places I’ve known all my life. The story was very good and the narrator was very good.

Good
Revisado: 01-23-25
I liked it but it left out some details like what exactly was going on with the teacher? Was she a man or a woman? What happened to the preacher liking her. And Sadie’s grandmother did the daughter ever come back? Did the grandmother die? I hope there’s a 2 nd book to explain some of this.

For YA WEIRD ending
Revisado: 12-18-24
I liked the first book better this 2nd book seems geared towards YA I know that all of these are but this one was more so. And the ending was weird, it’s like the book just cut off, I had to go back and listen just to make sure I didn’t miss something.
