Profound writing. Pedantic performance.

Great book. Terrific content. Many interesting insights. The vocal performance had a tone that sounded slightly condescending. (assuming unintentional) I used to read Sheehan's articles in Runner's World magazine. I believe the author originally offered this work with more humility and introspection intended. Reading Sheehan always inspired me. Hearing his words read by someone else sort of annoyed me because it wasn't the same as reading them. I believe the reading versus audible experience of this work are two different experiences.

I've read many reviews of this book and just shake my head at the people commenting on F-bombs, or whether his broken legs were really shin splints. These people could be standing in front of Michelangelo's David, and all they would see is his junk. They just don't get it.

First of all, this slashcast is an amazing audio listening experience. I still listen to it when I go on runs. Yeah, that's right, I'm not David f^@king Goggins. I listen to sh!t when I run. The combination of reading the book, sharing annotations and commentary, along with basically an interview, was a phenomenal way to immerse yourself in this content. I have never seen this done before, and I listen to a lot of audiobooks. It's a simple concept but profoundly changes and improves the listening experience. I feel stupid for never having thought of this idea before.

Regarding the performance, let's talk about team Goggins and Skolnick. How the heck did these two ever get together? They are two completely different people from different sides of the country, different cultures, different ethnicities, and yet they gelled together better than most buddy cop movies. Aren't you guys supposed to hate each other? The voice quality, pacing, energy, interchange between the two, and spontaneity is now my de facto tuning fork for all future audiobook purchases. Which means now, when I listen to the samples of audiobooks, I never want to buy any of them. Thanks for nothing guys.

Just the story itself is a wake-up call to anybody who ever felt lazy. But it also gives you practical ideas about how to overcome laziness and how to get moving.

This book also functions a little bit like a drill sergeant/big brother for a lot of people like me who want to keep improving. It's like having a successful friend who comes alongside you and smacks you upside the head and says, "come on, man, you can do this." "If I can do it you can do it." The 40% rule is just an idea until you realize David Goggins actually lived it. This book is evidence that you are an undisciplined punk, but you don't have to be. That's not necessarily a bad thing to learn.

So thanks Goggins and Skolnick for making me feel like a weak, stupid, lazy, fat, and undisciplined piece of sh!t. Why am I thankful? Because you also made me feel like I can flip this sh!t.

What did you love best about The Content Code?

Solid useful content throughout the whole work. Usually I skip sections, but in this case I was afraid I would miss something useful. You'd think this guy was a content marketer or something!!

What other book might you compare The Content Code to and why?

I like non-fiction, real-world, how-to books (and apparently hyphenated words) that give you real road-maps and resources to help you succeed. Reminded me of Tom Peters' Thriving on Chaos with all of the real world stories of case studies and results but focused on Content Marketing.

Any additional comments?

I recently attended a webinar with Mark as the main presenter. Seems like a genuinely good guy with great experience and knowledge to share. Very helpful to a small biz guy like me looking for mentors and knowledge. He puts it all out there on the blog and in social media, but I still recommend spending a few bucks to buy the work to use as a resource/reference.
