Historia
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were a Sixties supercharged couple in an era of supercharged couples. As a pairing they were fantasy figures, impossibly desirable. Liz supple and soft, in perfumes and furs - yet with something demonic and lethal about her. Dick, in turn, with his ravaged, handsome face, looked as though lit by silver moonlight - poised to turn into a wolf. Roger Lewis uses this glamorous and damaged pair as the starting point to tell the story of an age of excess.

a very smart observation
Revisado: 12-05-24
....an almost literary fever dream take on the famous couple...rambling in the best way... stream of conscious at times....as if Kenneth Tynan, Martin Amis or Harold Pinter were pulling the strings. AND by far the greatest performance/reading of any book I have ever listened to on Audible. I assume there are awards for book reading performances and this one should win hands down. The narrator, Justin Avoth, even manages to very convincingly, and not cringingly, impersonate not only Burton but other celebrities. An incredible performance and narrating as good as any of Burton's.

Historia
Eight years ago Moose Malloy and cute little redhead Velma were getting married - until someone framed Malloy for armed robbery. Now his stretch is up and he wants Velma back. PI Philip Marlow meets Malloy one hot day in Hollywood and, out of the generosity of his jaded heart, agrees to help him. Dragged from one smoky bar to another, Marlowe's search for Velma turns up plenty of dangerous gangsters with a nasty habit of shooting first and talking later.

What a performance!
Revisado: 04-19-20
The Chandler book is unparalleled. Never fails to amuse, astound and impress—the gold standard of noir. But the surprise here for me was the narration, the reading, the performance by Ray Porter. Seldom can narrators pull off different voices for different characters convincingly. It really worked here. Every nuance and brilliant description Porter’s delivery enhanced. Second only to Jeremy Irons’ narration of Lolita is Porter’s reading of Farewell My Lovely in my Audible history. I will now see what else he has narrated and follow him until I run out of money for credits.
