Historia
Empathy is undergoing a new evolution. In a global and interconnected culture, we can no longer afford to identify only with people who seem to be a part of our “tribe.” As Dr. Helen Riess has learned, our capacity for empathy is not just an innate trait - it is also a skill that we can learn and expand. With The Empathy Effect, Dr. Riess presents a definitive resource on empathy: the science behind how it works, new research on how empathy develops from birth to adulthood, and tools for building your capacity to create authentic emotional connection with others.

I Had High Hopes
Revisado: 07-11-24
I learned of this book from Alan Alda's book, 'If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look On My Face?' It was brilliant! He left me wanting to learn more and because he referenced this book, I got it with high hopes it would be as helpful. Frankly, I'm an empathic person who's suffered abuse because of it, both from others and myself. I really need to learn how to regulate it.
While there were some helpful bits here and there, when the author chose to elevate liberalism and demonize conservatism in several chapters, I found it to be distracting and juvenile. I would have liked the material to rise above politics, but if they needed to use it to illustrate their point, it would have been better to use negative examples from both groups. Thinking people know both sides are morally bankrupt. Be fair and unbiased or just stay away from the topic altogether. This book left me disappointed, and if I could return it, I would.
Alan Alda's book is far better. Get it and listen to it. I don't think you'll be disappointed

Before-After
Revisado: 05-16-24
The before- after device was a good way to move the story, but there were quite a few times I got lost. And, I'm not exactly clear on what the event is that we were beforing and altering. i also thought it was very predictable as i figured out the plot twist as soon as it was introduced. Other than that, I really enjoyed the story.

Historia
As the London Daily Gazette’s popular gossip columnist, she is extremely adept at sneaking into houses, assuming disguises and overseeing a vast network of spies to ensure she stays abreast of the beau monde’s comings and goings. If it sometimes seems as though she was hiding behind the settee during a particularly fierce quarrel between a husband and his wife, it’s most likely because she was hiding behind the settee during their fierce quarrel.

Maybe It's Just Me
Revisado: 04-29-24
I found the story a little difficult to follow, and I had trouble keeping up with all the characters. The characters were not distinguishable enough from one another, in other words, I didn't find them to be very well developed. There was no character worth rooting for, either. By a little over half way through, I gave up trying to find anything to like about the lead character, and instead, began hoping she'd be caught and... dispatched with. Sorry, I really wanted to like this.

Just What I Needed
Revisado: 01-26-24
Rarely does it go well when an author narrates his own work. Mr Bragg, however, does a wonderful job. His lilting drawl sweeps the listener away into the heart of the story making it as familiar as if we were there. It's good to be reminded of the slow pace that's always been associated with the South. The South where my grandparents lived. I live here, too, but it's different somehow. We've adopted a neverending busyness that keeps us scattered, and leaves us as weary when we wake as we where when we went to sleep.
This book was like an early summer Sunday afternoon nap with the breeze blowing in through the open window with the scent of rain in the air.
Yeah, I think you'll like it. I definitely recommend.

Bless Their Hearts
Revisado: 01-24-24
This author was very gifted in research. (He has passed away and this is the reason for past tense.) This was his first attempt at fiction, and it shows. He needed a good editor, but he didn't get one. I will say that I believe had I read this, it might not have been as bad, because the narrator was not good at all (I'm trying to be kind). It was obvious he was reading the wrong inflections throughout, and there was no distinction between characters. To be frank, I really wish this were available in text to speech.
Finally, the production value was erratic, awkward, annoying, and at times offensive (just trust me... stripper Muzak background=offensive.)
There are so many flaws, but these are the most deafening. It's just so disappointing. I had really wanted this book to be thought provoking...I guess it was, but not for the right reasons. I'd better stop at that.

Excellent But Challenging
Revisado: 05-06-23
We all deal with toxic people at some point. This book has really challenged my way of thinking about how to respond in a Christ-like way. it also is causing me to take a deeper look at my own heart and actions to ways I might be toxic... particularly to myself.
My only complaint is with the narration. i would encourage every author to use a professional voice actor to narrate for them in the same way they use editors for their material. it's worth the cost.

Historia
Imagine if you made one little mistake when you were young and were punished for it for the rest of your life. Well, that’s what happened to Lydia (yes, that Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister from Pride and Prejudice), and she’s here to set the record straight. Hold on to your teacups and get ready for sophisticated (and a little bit naughty) hot takes and witty banter that’ll make you laugh—and think. We meet Lydia just as she is denounced by her family, exiled miles from home, and married to the rogue George Wickham, who seems to love all women...except his own wife.

UNBELIEVABLE!
Revisado: 09-08-22
I really had low expectations for this brief dramatization. Surprisingly, they were far too low. I feel like spin-offs of Pride and Prejudice are prolific and most often sappy romance stories, but this had more substance to it. The quality of this performance and the writing is superior. I'm so glad I took a chance on it! I think you will be too.

Historia
Recipient of the 1966 Tanizaki Prize, it has been called Endo's supreme achievement" and "one of the twentieth century's finest novels". Considered controversial ever since its first publication, it tackles the thorniest religious issues of belief and faith head on. A novel of historical fiction, it is the story of a Jesuit missionary sent to seventeenth century Japan, who endured persecution that followed the defeat of the Shimabara Rebellion.

It's Not Horrible
Revisado: 09-01-22
This book was a struggle to get through. I was so tempted to stop several times. It’s not horrible... you just have to remember what it is, a written account of events, so it's not going to read like a novel. That being said, I'm not keeping it in my library.

Don't Read This...
Revisado: 03-10-22
Don't read this if you want to stay in your insulated comfort zone. If you don't want to be challenged or convicted, don't read this. BUT, if you're tired of being or feeling alone, or you're feeling the restlessness of wanting relationships that are deeper and richer, and if you're willing to get messy and willing to walk with other's messiness to get there, then you really should read this book. I really can't recommend it enough.
