Always Impressed with Mark Manson
Revisado: 01-25-25
I wonder if Rich Roll knows that Mark Manson is referring to him when he talks about the California mold of self help enthusiast. Great interview with Mark Manson, but Rich always has to interrupt what his guests are talking to put his 2 cents in. 🙄

Historia
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Historia
From the best-selling author of Kafka on the Shore comes this rich and revelatory memoir about writing and running and the integral impact both have made on his life. Equal parts training log, travelogue, and reminiscence, this revealing memoir covers Murakami's four-month preparation for the 2005 New York City Marathon. Settings range from Tokyo, where he once shared the course with an Olympian, to the Charles River in Boston, among young women who outpace him.

don't interrupt
Revisado: 08-12-22
like listening to Rich Roll and his guests. I just wish he would stop interrupting them. he does this right when they are going to make a point, then he interrupts and takes over the conversation. Almost 90% of the time the conversation goes off into a tangent and the point the guest was trying to make is never made. so annoying.

Historia
The culture of “safety” and its intolerance of opposing viewpoints has left many young people anxious and unprepared for adult life. Lukianoff and Haidt offer a comprehensive set of reforms that will strengthen young people and institutions, allowing us all to reap the benefits of diversity, including viewpoint diversity. This is a book for anyone who is confused by what’s happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live and work and cooperate across party lines.

Great theory, wrong conclusion.
Revisado: 07-08-22
I value Mark Manson's book recommendations. this was one of them. After listening to the first chapter, I knew immediately that the author/narrator was a liberal. I continued listening to give the book a fair shot. the second chapter was so skewed to the left/ liberal. I could barely continue listening and yet I had to - my hands were to sweaty to change my book selection. I was somewhat frustrated after finishing my run.
The author makes valid observations about college campuses and the student mind shift over the years. I just find it very difficult to agree with his reasons why they are happening. He points out a very important fact that university educators are liberal and outnumber conservative educators by 17:1. I just couldn't help but feel that he blamed evil republican conservatives for causing this mindshift.
College protest on your campus - it's because conservatives provoked it. Angry liberal mobs at a Oregon university campus protesting liberal professors - its because conservatives provoked it. it was almost humorous that the author went out of his way to blame republican conservatives.
Is it any surprise that this author classifies himself as a liberal? (Check wikipedia).

Part narrative, part practical, this adventure takes you to the foothills of Ethiopia and the ‘town of runners’; to the training grounds of world-record-holding marathon runners in Kenya; racing across the Arctic Circle and the mountains of Europe, through the sweltering sands of the Sahara and the hostility of a winter traverse of the Pennine Way, to witness the incredible natural movement of runners in these environments.

good book

so many running books and all just seem to brag about how great they are. this one seemed different in that it actually got me thinking about how to incorporate some of the authors ideas into my training. made me think about how we approach running in general.

Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Something about hearing a so called "educated" lady swear and talk trashy just doesn't appeal to me. you can't even focus on what she's saying because of the trash talk. the audio is horrible. Come on authors, pay a little money to get your book read by a professional.
