Historia
Affluence, autonomy, safety, and power. These are the central values of the American dream. But are they actually compatible with Jesus' command to love our neighbor as ourselves? In essays grouped around these four values, D. L. Mayfield asks us to pay attention to the ways they shape our own choices, and the ways those choices affect our neighbors. Where did these values come from? How have they failed those on the edges of our society? And how can we disentangle ourselves from our culture's headlong pursuit of these values and live faithful lives of service to God and our neighbors?

Sooooo good. Powerful
Revisado: 08-19-21
I cannot say enough good about this book. It’s extremely timely right now with the Afghanistan crisis, Haitian earthquake, and ongoing racial and pandemic trauma.
DL’s insight into the immigrant and refugee experiences was powerful. I loved the portion about Jer 29:11. I loved the portion about schools and the harm it’s doing as white Christians homeschool and use private schools.
Her message reminds me of something I’ve found myself saying lately, “we belong to each other.” This is community.
Ps. Excellent writing!

Historia
Everything Is Spiritual is a brief history of how these ideas about creation, love, and connection shaped the author - and can shape every one of us. In this audiobook, Rob Bell explores the concept that what people really want, more than anything, is to understand their purpose here - so much so that it gives them an abiding sense of awe and wonder. And when you embrace where and who you come from and your wounds and pains and regrets, you will discover that there's an invitation lurking there in the mess of life.

Revisado: 08-12-21
Beautiful, smart, encouraging, fun to read. I once believed Rob Bell was some sort of radical heretic but now nothing he says feels “out there” to me…he’s talking about and teaching ideas people have pondered for centuries. He’s showing us how to ask questions and embrace the big-ness of God. How is that heretical? It’s not!
Thank Goddess I left fundamentalism. One of the best decisions of my entire life.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Gosh, this book took my breath away. It was fascinating from the first few minutes and never reached a point that wasn’t interesting. I loved every minute of it, even as my heart break, and my stomach dropped, and I fought tears.
So thorough, so well written. Wow!

I had downloaded this months ago but never read it- I think I wasn’t quite ready. I read it this week in a few days. It blew my mind. The chapter about internalizers called me out hardcore lol. This book gave words to my life experiences and I find that incredibly affirming and helpful.
Excellent book.

Historia
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

This is a phenomenal book and a must read for anyone raised evangelical or still involved in the/a Evangelical church.
This book talked about every household name of faith and honestly so much of what I was taught and the way my family has behaved in relation to Trump makes even more sense now.

Whatever you think you know about her, you don’t. This was raw, honest. When she teared up talking about her cousin, I did, too.
Brave and beautiful, I loved this book.
