While I enjoyed the original 3 books of Riyria immensely, I found this book to be tired and predictable to a fault. Not even the brilliant narration of TGR could save it from the slow road to nowhere. The brilliance I found in the initial Riyria book 1, chapter one "Pickles" will forever be the high watermark of this series. The magic is gone in book 5. Its time to get back to weaving some original stories as I believe MJS is fully capable of.

This is the third time I have listened to this book. There are few books that fit this criteria of engagement and world building. Great story and narration with an ending that will amaze.

The magic of Pickles ?

I have listened to every book written by Michael ever since he set the hook with the brilliant world built around Hadrian and his chance meeting with Pickles in the Riyria Chronicles series. If I use the example of Pickles, he represented a short character weave that continued as new characters entered the story line to love and hate, in a world you never wanted to leave. Yet I found Nolyn to be too much of a bridge between established series without the customary hooks and turns to give it stand alone power. I realize that subsequent books may prove me wrong. But I have listened to the writing in Riyria at least once a year to get my "fix". To me Nolyn was a necessary task with the hope of more "magic" down the road. I guess you have to cross some bridges to get to the mountains. TGR is 5 stars as always and MJS will hopefully find his "Pickles" in book 2 and 3.

I am a true believer in the talent of this author that something special awaits.

(UPDATE....BOOK 2 = Fariline).....I could only "grind" through 5 chapters before returning. The main character, Princess Fariline plods through an endless discourse with herself and those around her that becomes ad nauseam. The magic of Pickles was the genius of using the fewest words to create an immediate immersion to Character and plot. Pickles is the finest opening chapter (Hook) I have ever read and remains MJS masterpiece in "The Crown Tower".

This book is a horrible listen. I stuggled through 5 chapters and could not take it. And Audible will not allow a return.....so don't waste your time

A MUST READ

Adrian delivers a spell binding world as you get pulled into the characters and their struggles to survive the dominance of one race over many. Behind the story, his words whisper of mans own struggle between good and evil in a devilish tale. For me it was always one more chapter past midnight.

Run away from this book

When a book starts off slow...I will try and force myself to slog on hoping that the author will get control. I will read almost anything narrated by one of the most gifted (like Tim G. Reynolds). But after 4 hours I had to deal with 100s of characters in plots that were truly DOA. Instead of not wanting to put the book down, I would have to stop constantly to relief my brain. If you want an outstanding series try the Michael J. Sullivan and his Riyria chronicles,,,,,

Mr Ford goes little to give this read any sense of pace. The concepts are their, but one book, not a trilogy. I guess we all have to make a living. Debating on next book
