Historia
As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house until one night her stargazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.

GUTTED!!
Revisado: 02-06-17
This novel ran me over emotionally and I loved every moment of it. The ending left me questioning whether a young reader might think that the kind of relationship between Wavy and Kellan (adult:minor) is always safe because this was a unique situation. Here, he was her only safe sanctuary. He saved her. He loved her and knew how to care for her. I doubt most 24 year olds would be so wise and so aware of the damage he could cause. Exhale. Highly recommend.

In this brilliant, heartbreaking book, Matthew Desmond takes us into the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of eight families on the edge. Arleen is a single mother trying to raise her two sons on the $20 a month she has left after paying for their rundown apartment. Scott is a gentle nurse consumed by a heroin addiction. Lamar, a man with no legs and a neighborhood full of boys to look after, tries to work his way out of debt. Vanetta participates in a botched stickup after her hours are cut.

A mechanized voice?
Revisado: 08-22-16
The description says a human read the summary but it truly sounds like a machine! So distracting. The content was not as interesting as I anticipated but it may have been due to the "narrator". Skip this. Read the book. That's what I plan to do.

Not up to par
Revisado: 06-28-16
While I loved this author's first novel, this one didn't sing to me in the same way. The writing was more precious and the protagonist less sympathetic. Disappointing.

Alice Pearse is a mostly happily married mother of three, an attentive daughter, an ambivalent dog owner, a part-time editor, a loyal neighbor, and a Zen commuter. Fun read
Revisado: 09-10-15
I thoroughly enjoyed this book but would probably have it enjoyed it a bit less if all of the surroundings weren't so familiar to me as the fictional suburb of Filament is a real town in north jersey. He novel is well written and the plot moved well. It's touching and funny and all very familiar to life's realities for this of this generation. The end sagged a bit but overall a good read.

Historia
The death of Judd Foxman's father marks the first time that the entire Foxman family - including Judd's mother, brothers, and sister - have been together in years. Conspicuously absent: Judd's wife, Jen, whose 14-month affair with Judd's radio-shock-jock boss has recently become painfully public. Judd joins the rest of the Foxmans as they reluctantly submit to their patriarch's dying request: to spend the seven days following the funeral together.

Grabbed me and held on...
Revisado: 06-13-15
This novel about a familiar and complicated family grabbed me quickly and held my attention throughout. I should probably let this sit a bit before writing this as I just finished the book but the end was a bit too open ended for me. Yes life is filled with options but which feels right for you? Oh Judd. Definitely a fan of Tropper's now.

When NPR's Scott Simon began tweeting from his mother's hospital room in July 2013, he didn't know that his missives would soon spread well beyond his 1.2 million Twitter followers. Squeezing the magnitude of his final days with her into 140-character updates, Simon's evocative and moving meditations spread virally. Over the course of a few days, Simon chronicled his mother's death and reminisced about her life, revealing her humor and strength, and celebrating familial love.

Historia
In this beautifully written novel that blends the whimsy of The Time Traveler’s Wife with an indelible portrait of motherhood, a young woman strives to pick up the pieces after her husband mysteriously leaves - and she finds strength from the unlikeliest of allies. Jenny Lipkin is an average, stretched-too-thin Brooklyn mom tackling the challenges of raising two children in a cramped Park Slope walk-up and bonding with the other moms about breast-feeding while spending endless hours in Prospect Park.

Would you try another book from Amy Shearn and/or Hillary Huber?
nope
What could Amy Shearn have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
nothing I can think of
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Really bad kid voices. Russian voice was good.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was disappointed. Felt like a blog that was published. Not enough there there for me.

An ordinary life—its sharp pains and unexpected joys, its bursts of clarity and moments of confusion—lived by an ordinary woman: this is the subject of Someone, Alice McDermott's extraordinary return, seven years after the publication of After This. Scattered recollections—of childhood, adolescence, motherhood, old age—come together in this transformative narrative, stitched into a vibrant whole by McDermott's deft, lyrical voice.

fluid, rich tale of the ordinary
Revisado: 10-06-13
Would you consider the audio edition of Someone to be better than the print version?
Wonderfully written and my first foray into the work of Ms. McDermott. However, i have to say, I would have enjoyed the novel even more if the narrator didn't have the irritating habit of upspeaking: she ended far too many sentence on the upswing as though each statement were a question. Very distracting. The writing, however, won me over. Great first read and won't be my last of hers.
What three words best describe Kate Reading’s performance?
Stop the upspeak please. Definition: Affliction affecting my in today's society not just teenagers where a person makes a question out of a sentence that isn't a question (or more simply speaks "up" at the end of a sentence)
