For a first novel this was very, very well done. The narrator was particularly good at all the different characters. The story was a little slow to launch, but once it got going kept my attention and had many twist, turns, and developments.

Viola Davis narrates her own journey beautifully. She has a level of candor and honesty that is eye-opening about her determination to rise out of poverty herself but also the continuing pull to be financially supporting her extended family that continues to struggle.
I would strongly commend this book to people who love Viola Davis or want to love her more! She is an excellent storyteller and her truth is both heart wrenching and inspiring.
