Historia
Miah Gray is a 27-year-old former army soldier living in rural New Hampshire with his sister, mother, and her boyfriend. He is plagued by PTSD, finding solace, but not redemption, with the aid of prescribed cannabis. All he wants to do is get high, relax with a good sandwich, and watch a meteor shower with his neighborhood crush, Jen. When the sun's light is blotted out the following morning and the world is plunged into darkness, Miah finds himself locked down with his family, covering windows with trash bags, lighting candles, and following the arcane rules of an ancient prophecy.

Not the 'Same Old Thing'
Revisado: 08-12-22
I found "The Dark" - seventh in the "Infinite" series - a fun and gruesome ride, often catching myself marveling at how unique and creative it was. ( Others who have read other "Infinite" volumes may disagree with me.) R.C. Bray was fantastic as ever.

Historia
Rex Walker always wanted to be like his father: a daring, adventurous man, traveling the world in pursuit of mysterious relics. While teaching anthropology at a Boston college, Rex attempts to bury the past, until he discovers a hidden clue he can’t ignore. With the help of a former student, he teams up with an alien-obsessed billionaire, and they search for the fabled Bridge. As an unidentified object nears Pluto, speculation surges. Some hail it as the homecoming of a distant alien race, and this cult is unwavering in their efforts to usher our world into a new era.

Ray Porter is the only saving grace
Revisado: 11-18-21
I took a chance on Lost Contact, because it was performed by Ray Porter. I found sharing the search for each scattered piece to be far from compelling. The connect-the-dots plotting made less sense as it lurched along. Who didn't guess the identity of the stranger in the Australian bar as soon as she appeared? Unfortunately, Mr. Porter was the only reason I stuck with it. Even then, Mr. Porter has been way better.

Historia
Terrorists-for-hire have created a weapon that can induce earthquakes and cause dormant volcanoes to erupt. One terrifying side effect of the weapon is that prior to the devastation, the vibrations drive ordinary people to suicide and violence. A wave of madness begins sweeping the country beginning with a mass shooting in Congress. Joe Ledger and his team go on a wild hunt to stop the terrorists and uncover the global superpower secretly funding them. At every step the stakes increase as it becomes clear that the endgame of this campaign of terror is igniting the Yellowstone caldera.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Revelation upon Revelation
Revisado: 09-28-20
There is not much that I can say that hasn't already been said in praise of CASTE. The section detailing the Third Reich's use of Jim Crow laws in the American South as a model for oppressing the Jews was a shocking revelation. I believe that one must diagnosis a sickness before it can be cured. Isabel Wilkerson reveals the affliction at the heart of the United States. It up to us to devise a cure.

'Nerves' by Lester del Rey
Revisado: 08-29-19
I associate the name of Lester del Rey with the science fiction imprint at Ballantine.. I hadn't experienced any of his writing until I listened to "Nerves" in this collection. Sadly, I found the novella to be completely uninteresting, and I suspect its inclusion in this SFWA collection to be prompted more by loyalty than quality. By itself, "Nerves" lowered my score from five to four stars. As expected with selections performed by a disparate set of readers, the narrators formed a mixed bag - some great, some okay.

Historia
Wyatt Gwyon's desire to forge is not driven by larceny but from love. Exactingly faithful to the spirit and letter of the Flemish masters, he produces uncannily accurate "originals" - pictures the painters themselves might have envied. In an age of counterfeit emotion and taste, the real and fake have become indistinguishable; yet Gwyon's forgeries reflect a truth that others cannot touch - cannot even recognize.

It Might Not Be for Everyone, But I Was Ready
Revisado: 03-12-19
I've known of Gaddis and his writing for a very long time, but it was only recently that I acquired the "The Recognitions" on Audible. What a blast! I wish I had attempted it sooner, but something tells me I may not have had the reading chops before now. Nick Sullivan's performance may be the best I have ever listened to. As soon as I saw Mr. Sullivan was reading "JR" as well, I added it to my playlist.

Historia
Absalom, Absalom! tells the story of Thomas Sutpen, the enigmatic stranger who came to Jefferson township in the early 1830s. With a French architect and a band of wild Haitians, he wrung a fabulous plantation out of the muddy bottoms of the north Mississippi wilderness. Sutpen was a man, Faulker said, "who wanted sons and the sons destroyed him". His tragedy left its impress not only on his contemporaries but also on men who came after, men like Quentin Compson, haunted even into the 20th century by Sutpen's legacy.

Revisado: 02-12-19
It has been more than a quarter century since I read this book - and any other Faulkner for that matter. Taking a two-semester course in grad school devoted to Faulkner, I pretty much read everything. Absalom, Absalom! was my favorite. It was a great pleasure returning to these pages through Grover Gardner's remarkable performance..

It scratched my Thomas Pynchon itch enough to make me eager to reread GRAVITY'S RAINBOW soon. (But, I think I just may listen to this terrific performance again first!)

Powerful Patchwork
Revisado: 06-20-18
It was so easy getting caught up in the wondrous lives of the Atemporals and watching the machinations in the war with the Acolytes. In the closing pages though, Mitchell forced us to remember that we are all too temporal and that our way of life will soon end. Depressing indeed. In the end, Marinis' reappearance was not there to provide a brief uplift, but rather to remind us that the Atemporals manipulated humanity for their own ends. Surely Lor and Raff were essential cogs to be retrieved.
I was thrilled to experience such a tremendous book through the performances of the narrators. Kudos to all!
