Historia
A charismatic man with a legacy that long outlives him. A forgotten woman whose fate is forever tied to his. And the family whose history is still being written. Toulouse, France—1879 Catalan orphan-turned-fugitive Viviana Torrens has found sanctuary serving in the home of an aging artist in Southern France. It is in his studio that she meets Francisco Vella, a Gibraltarian merchant who sells pigments to artists. When her past catches up to her, she is compelled to pose as Vella’s sister and join him on his travels or be deported back to Spain to stand trial.

Disappointed with ending
Revisado: 10-21-24
I was totally engaged in this story, but the closer I got to finding out how the past and the present connected, the more disappointed I got. The author seems to be making a statement that there is no purpose in romance and praises women's independence. I personally believe women can be strong and romantic at the same time. I'm not a huge romance fan, but I thought the male characters in the book were cheated and undermined. The voices were well done by the narrator, and that was the book's saving grace.

Historia
Wren Blythe has long enjoyed being among the Northwoods, helping her father with programming at a youth camp. But when a little girl in the area goes missing, an all-out search ensues, reviving the decades-old campfire story of Ava Coons, the murderess, who still roams the woods. Joining the search, Wren stumbles upon the Coons cabin ruins and a rotting porcelain doll. But even more terrifying is seeing her name etched on the doll's foot like a sinister omen.

Great story, narrator confused
Revisado: 02-07-24
This story is great and quite a feat for the author to write in three time periods. The narrator is not bad,
however, I wish she'd decide if Hannah's husband is LEVI (long I) or LEVEE )short i). She goes back and forth on her pronunciation of the name.

Terrible narrator!
Revisado: 01-23-24
It's been very difficult to pay attention to the story because the narrator is so bad. She stops frequently in the middle of sentences, and her voice goes from low to normal, so I can't get the volume right. Also, the young woman character sounds like an older woman, and you can't tell the woman's voice from the man's. There's no difference. I feel sorry for the author because this narrator does such a disservice to her book.

The worst audible I've ever had.
Revisado: 10-25-23
The story was entertaining, but after listening to five hours and 50 chapters, the story ended and a chapter from another book played. I contacted Audible the next day and was told to delete the recording from my library, then download it again. I did that and received two parts, which I had not received initially, so I set out to finish the story, but it kept going back to previous chapters each time I tried to move forward. The chapter numbers made no sense, as I should have been listening to chapters in the 60's, but it kept going back to chapter 51. I finally gave up, and the only way I'll know what happened and how these three stories I invested so much time in were resolved at the end is to buy the print book, defeating the whole purpose of having Audible.

Narrator's voice lacks emotion and inflection.
Revisado: 03-08-23
This story is well-researched and well-written, revealing WWII in Greece, a little-written about setting. Tolsma has done a wonderful job depicting the hazardous situation of Greek Jews. Unfortunately, the narrator is droll. The only voices she does that have any inflection are the male voices, Greek and German, which is strange because the narrator is female.

Historia
In this gripping WWII time-slip novel from the author whose books have been called “propulsive” and a “must-read” (Publishers Weekly), Grace Tonquin is an American Quaker who works tirelessly in Vichy France to rescue Jewish children from the Nazis. After crossing the treacherous Pyrénées, Grace returns home to Oregon with a brother and sister whose parents were lost during the war. Though Grace and her husband love Élias and Marguerite as their own, echoes of Grace’s past and trauma from the Holocaust tear the Tonquin family apart.

I loved listening to this book. Besides my interest in World War 2 England, the narrator did a marvelous job distinguishing the voices. Am looking forward to the next book in the series!

Revisado: 11-06-21
I loved this story! The author did a fabulous job blending past and present, romance, humor, and suspense! Readers who enjoy WWII novels will love this one. Also, the narration and accents were spot on. My only complaint is that the book should have ended about two chapters sooner than it did.
