Historia
Zhu Yuanzhang, the Radiant King, is riding high after her victory that tore southern China from its Mongol masters. Now she burns with a new desire: to seize the throne and crown herself emperor. But Zhu isn’t the only one with imperial ambitions. Her neighbor in the south, the courtesan Madam Zhang, wants the throne for her husband—and she’s strong enough to wipe Zhu off the map. To stay in the game, Zhu will have to gamble everything on a risky alliance with an old enemy: the talented but unstable eunuch general Ouyang, who has already sacrificed everything for a chance at revenge.

So amazing
Revisado: 09-05-23
What a beautifully epic way to end the duology. A generally dark story that ends with so much light and hope. I can’t recommend this story enough.

Historia
Touraine is a soldier. Stolen as a child and raised to kill and die for the empire, her only loyalty is to her fellow conscripts. But now, her company has been sent back to her homeland to stop a rebellion, and the ties of blood may be stronger than she thought. Luca needs a turncoat. Someone desperate enough to tiptoe the bayonet's edge between treason and orders. Someone who can sway the rebels toward peace, while Luca focuses on what really matters: getting her uncle off her throne.

The characters are so frustrating!
Revisado: 01-01-23
Touraine is very loyal, except she is really terrible at choosing who is worthy of her loyalty. She makes bad decisions repeatedly and it is just painful to watch. She does have a history of abuse and manipulation she is struggling to overcome, but it takes her a looong time to get there. I was pulling my hair out for 16 hours.
And Luca is so entitled and arrogant that it is really hard to like anything about her. The whole time she is saying she “wants to be a good queen blah-blah” and “if-only… if-only” and she is just patently bad at ruling. She does absolutely nothing right and makes everything worse all the time—without even the excuse of having a bad childhood to overcome (though somehow she still has angst over her privileged upbringing).
Basically 95% of the book is an ever-deteriorating dumpster fire. And you wonder how could things get worse and then it gets worse and you laugh to keep yourself from crying.
All that said, I kept reading because I really wanted to know how it ended! It is a miraculous ending and there is finally some desperately needed character development. I was glad I stuck it out. But really, did it need to be that painful?

Feminist fantasy
Revisado: 12-30-22
This was a great and bloody opening to the five queendoms series. If you like high fantasy with political intrigue and violence, you will like this story. I can’t wait for the next book!
Without spoiling, I’d like to answer a few questions prospective readers might have: some POV characters die, so be prepared for that. Men are mostly an afterthought with only a few who contribute to the storyline and not majorly. There are heterosexual and lesbian relationships with only one explicit sex scene and there is polygamy in one of the queendoms. As for non-binary or trans characters (the biggest question I always have with stories that seem so focused on gender): with only 1 minor non-binary character, it remains to be seen how representation might change in future books though it is a possibility in this world.

Not a female Jack Reacher, but still great!
Revisado: 12-10-22
Lexi is a female Jack Reacher if Jack Reacher had a home, a family, a job, a steady girlfriend and 1 leg. I’m a huge fan of Stacy Lynn Miller’s books and Lee Child’s character Jack Reacher, so the description really had me excited. While it was still a great, dramatic story—I think it was a bit misleading to compare Lexi Mills to Jack Reacher.

Annoying narration ruined it for me
Revisado: 07-06-22
I’m not usually really picky about narration, but I just could NOT get past this one. She does great voices, but the actual narration was slow and singsong-y in a way definitely not suited for the type of action packed story this is. And she had a habit of adding a “th” sound at the end of every sentence. It was all tragically too distracting for me to enjoy the story which otherwise would have been really great. I’m going to have to read it silently or wait for a new narrator. Moral of the story: great voice acting does not translate to good narration.

Historia
Faith Fitzgerald thought that if she got an education and became a high-powered attorney in Manhattan, maybe she'd gain the attention and respect of her absentee father. What she dreamed would be glamorous and satisfying turned out to be grueling and thankless. Deciding she is done, Faith packs up and leaves New York and heads home to Colorado. On the drive home, she finds herself in Wynter, a tiny mountain town at the foot of the Rockies. When she tries her luck and buys a raffle ticket at Pop’s, Wynter’s charming café, her prize is far more than meets the eye - or the heart.

Sweet and hopeful romance
Revisado: 05-06-22
(It’s a shame that a homophobe can overlook the description, refuse to read the book and then give a 1-star rating for no reason besides their own bigotry.)
This was a hopeful story even through the darkness of sexual and domestic abuse. It’s inspiring the way the town heals alongside Faith’s relationship with her father. Wyatt is a sweet character whose strength in spite of her abusive husband is to be admired. There is no abuse explicit in the book, but it is referred to, so be aware before heading in. I assure you however, the warm fuzzies far outweigh the heavy stuff in this precious small-town romance. I’m so glad it’s a series! On to the next!

Super cool sapphic secret agent looking for vengeance and justice? Hell yeah. Admittedly, I wish it had been more kill bill than killing eve, but I do enjoy a moral upper hand all the same.
But wtf is with this “organization” kicking out a member who was obviously going through some major psychological stuff and not even offering access to therapy???

Violet starts out pretty naive and can be really annoying, but she’s always put in her place and she becomes the biggest badass by about halfway through. There is a ton of action and bad guys getting what they deserve. It’s a great love story too.
Be warned: there is a mixup on the recording. The El Paso chapters (about halfway through) are out of order which is really confusing. Nothing is missing, just in the wrong order.
