Historia
Had it not been for the scent bottles, it is unlikely that Daniel Shelbourne, Viscount Reculver, and Anna Hawthorne of Hawthorne’s Porcelain would ever have met. Daniel’s late father left him an impoverished estate – which he had expected – and unexplained debts, which he hadn’t. Anna inherited a thriving business, along with the knowledge and passion required to run it.

Another satisfying story from SR!
Revisado: 12-24-24
Another very satisfying book from Stella Riley. The sweet love story of a VERY unlikely pair woven with a bit of intrigue. This was an excellent road trip binge listen! Perfect narration. This was Shadows #2 and I am always delighted when Stella brings in former characters and allows us an updated glimpse into their lives. Stella paints in lovely detail, an accurate historical & cultural picture of her characters and setting. I learn about English history & culture without even realizing it!

Fascinating take on an iconic figure.
Revisado: 05-15-24
It was fascinating to get acquainted with the iconic character of the American West, Butch Cassidy. Such a unique cast that I am so grateful to have met. As usual, Amy Harmon weaves historical fact with fiction to create a beautiful story. Depicting human character, struggle, loss and love so beautifully. Excellent narration! At times the story seemed to plod along, a bit slow for me. I wish I had read the author’s note at the beginning. Throughout the book, I found myself wondering what was true and what was not. But that is just me.

Historia
San Francisco, 1906. In a city bustling with newly minted millionaires and scheming upstarts, two very different women hope to change their fortunes: Gemma, a golden-haired, silver-voiced soprano whose career desperately needs rekindling, and Suling, a petite and resolute Chinatown embroideress who is determined to escape an arranged marriage. Their paths cross when they are drawn into the orbit of Henry Thornton, a charming railroad magnate whose extraordinary collection of Chinese antiques includes the fabled Phoenix Crown, a legendary relic of Beijing’s fallen Summer Palace.

Fascinating history & setting. Slow start.
Revisado: 03-05-24
Big fan of Kate Quinn. However, this was not my favorite. Very slow start for me. Glad I did not give up. Was not sucked into the story or characters like I have been in her other novels. Really enjoyed the setting of San Francisco and gaining a better understanding of the quake of 1906 and the subsequent destruction of the city by fire. Appreciated learning about the Chinese who lived in the city at that time. Ending was rather anticlimactic for me. Overall a 3.5

Revisado: 02-27-24
A heavy, heartbreaking and beautiful story. Like The Nightingale, this is a KH book that I wish I could read again for the first time. So much learned through this novel. I’ll be thinking on this one for a while. Easy five stars.

Historia
One little white lie—that's all it took. Now I'm suddenly having to fake-date my work nemesis to get through a week at a Vermont Christmas lodge with my family. The problem? I can't stand Miles Taylor. Not only that, but I don't date people I work with. But I can handle it. I've had practice faking my emotions for years. So it shouldn't matter that Miles never lets me get away with anything. And that he happens to boil my blood hotter than a steaming pot of wassail. So when he throws his annoying grin my way or forces me on dates he knows I'll hate, I'll just grit my teeth and smile.

Another delightful story from Stella Riley!
Revisado: 09-18-23
Since 2020, when I flew through Stella Riley’s Rockliff series during quarantine, I have eagerly awaited each of her subsequent novels. As an American myself, Stella’s detailed descriptions of life among the English aristocracy are fascinating. Her characters are unique, endearing and the plot twists pull me in. In The Shadow Earl, I was delighted to meet new characters. I hope to hear from them again in future installments. Alex Wyndham’s narration as always, brings the tale to life beautifully.

Historia
Every day Iona, a larger-than-life magazine advice columnist, travels the ten stops from Hampton Court to Waterloo Station by train, accompanied by her dog, Lulu. Every day she sees the same people, whom she knows only by nickname: Impossibly-Pretty-Constant-Reader and Terribly-Lonely-Teenager. Of course, they never speak. Seasoned commuters never do. Then one morning, the man she calls Smart-But-Sexist-Manspreader chokes on a grape right in front of her. He’d have died were it not for the timely intervention of Sanjay, a nurse, who gives him the Heimlich maneuver.
