Historia
In Unruly, David Mitchell explores how early England's monarchs, while acting as feared rulers firmly guiding their subjects' destinies, were in reality a bunch of lucky sods who were mostly as silly and weird in real life as they appear to us today in their portraits.

Love history? Love David Mitchell? (Why not? He’s one of the funniest minds of our generation, and he’s quite cute, too!) Lots to love about this book. Things I already knew, but other stuff I didn’t, and all of it presented in an engaging, funny way. Have listened many times.

The author really could have used a editor.
Revisado: 06-09-24
Very repetitive, condescending, and it misses the point of what makes this subject fascinating. Sorry to be so harsh. An editor may have helped. Very glad it was free with membership, otherwise I’d have returned it.

Historia
When Queen Mary died in 1953, James Pope-Hennessy was commissioned to write an official biography of her - unusual for a Queen Consort. Queen Mary's life, contrary to popular belief, was essentially dramatic, and she played a far more important and influential role in the affairs of the British monarchy than her public image might have otherwise suggested. Using material from the Royal Archives, private papers and Queen Mary's personal diaries and letters, Pope-Hennessy's biography was a remarkable portrait of a remarkable woman and received rave reviews across the press.

Queen Mary
Revisado: 07-11-22
This biography is as thorough and engaging as can be. Queen Mary was only a vague historical figure to me, distinctive in looks and stern in appearance. There’s so much more to her than that. The book is a doorway into a world of wonders. I can also recommend In Search of Queen Mary which recounts all the research and many of the notes and interviews.

Historia
Growing up in humdrum Swanley in Kent with loving parents, Mark Steel had never been bothered about being an adopted child. But in later life, established as a successful comedian and writer, he decided to search for his biological parents. What he uncovered was a story so strange, a cast of characters so eccentric and far-fetched that he was transported to social and cultural divides that spanned half the world.

Amazing
Revisado: 02-24-22
Wonderfully surprising, poignant at times, and of course, often irreverently funny. Absolutely effing amazing. Hated for it to end, hope there’s a follow up one day. Have always loved and admired Mark Steel, and now am left feeling that I know him personally, and like him all the more. Get this book, it’s an unforgettable ride.

Historia
There was a time during Donald Davis's college freshman year when he wasn't really sure if he wanted to claim his hometown of Sulpher Springs, North Carolina. But a boy by the name of Stanley Easter changed his mind. "The year after that," he recalls, "I did go home from college for Thanksgiving. In fact, I had now become so proud of where I was from that I could hardly wait to get home. I no longer had to lie about where I was from. The world of childhood was quickly becoming a dear place to visit."

Historia
You'd know Fred Stoller if you saw him. He has appeared on practically every great sitcom you've ever seen - Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends, and Murphy Brown just to name a few. But he has never been a regular on a series, always the guest star. He longs to find a showbiz home. Instead, he is a television foster child, shuttling from show to show in the vain hope that one will finally agree to keep him.

Revisado: 02-17-21
This was a wonderful story, and I was genuinely sorry when it was finished. It’s never easy to swim against the current and follow your own path. Fred takes us there, to the crossroads where he has to decide. It’s a triumph when he resumes what he loves, despite even his own lack of confidence.

Really poorly written, repetitious and several times at odds with details reported on documentaries. Narrator may be doing his best with such lacklustre material, but he doesn't improve matters.

Historia
For eight years, Sheriff David Reichert devoted days and nights to capturing the Green River Killer - the most notorious serial killer in American history. He was the first detective on the case in 1982 and doggedly pursued it as the body count climbed to 49 and it became the most infamous unsolved case in the nation. Frantically following all leads, even as more bodies surfaced near the river outside Seattle, Sheriff Reichert befriended the victims' families, publicly challenged the killer, and risked his own safety - and the endurance and love of his family - before he found his madman.

Conveys the frustration and crushing sense of the early days of the investigation, with much detail not covered in other works on this subject.
