Historia
The king's magnificent palace was built in a matter of weeks. No one saw the builders, no villagers are allowed beyond the gilded gate, and only one servant has ever left. The haunted look in her eyes as she was recaptured by the palace guards is something Josie, daughter of the village doctor, has never forgotten. For Josie, the palace is a mystery that grows more intriguing after she meets the captain of the guards, a man known only as Hammer, as mysterious and captivating as the palace itself. Whispers of magic fuel Josie's desire to uncover the truth, but an ordinary girl like her can only dream of ever being invited inside.

Great overall
Revisado: 04-22-25
Likes:
Good story
Great narration
Decent mystery
Good characters
Dislikes:
The occasional F-bomb is totally unnecessary. Why bother? It just decreases the integrity of the literature.
I’ll read Book 2 and see what happens. The story is compelling, but I care about clean words, too. I really like this author overall and the narrator is amazing.

Liked ok
Revisado: 01-10-25
It was ok, especially on Plus. Not very believable heroine. I don’t like being set up for the duel between two incredibly amazing men both immediately falling for this woman whom no one has noticed for years. Now we have to be strung along wondering who’s going to win the main character. Honestly, she doesn’t seem THAT great. And silly stuff. Hyperbolically unlikable men, a killer who suddenly spills guts at the end with very little motivation to do so, after being super devious to cover crimes all throughout the story, and the like. If you don’t mind not feeling super engaged or convinced, it’s an entertaining story. Narrator is good, which makes all the difference.

Annoying main character
Revisado: 12-08-24
Rarely would I leave a negative review, but I just have never disliked a character as much as Holly. Whiny and arrogant, she continues to bumble through mysteries, always getting into trouble and making her sheriff boyfriend have to drop everything and rescue her. She refuses to respect him as an officer, and knows more than everyone else. When he gets frustrated at her idiocy, she gets angry at him and he wimpishly apologizes. She doesn’t SOLVE mysteries, she annoys the killers into revealing themselves and wanting to kill her and then everyone gives her the credit. Always has to be rescued, again. The first two volumes were free and I regret paying for the third one. Sorry, but no respect from me for this character who selfishly repeats the same mistakes in every story and learns nothing from it.

Great characters and story—one of my very favorites! Narrator is excellent. The story is complex and super interesting. The characters are compelling. If they can keep the language a little cleaner it would be PERFECT. More, please!

Double Standards
Revisado: 08-30-24
The main character is a bigger jerk than any of the men in the story. It’s interesting that while it’s not okay to demean women (and it definitely is not), this author spends a lot of time demeaning men. I am a strong woman, and I like strong women, but being seriously bitter most of the time while also believing that laws apply to everyone but yourself doesn’t make a woman strong. The story could be fun, but I get tired of people who think feminism means running roughshod over men. Men ARE people of equal value to women. Respect and kindness is a better measure of strength, in my opinion. Not to mention a caricature of a mother who is the tackiest person I could ever imagine. She thinks nothing of throwing her daughter at any man who exists and objectifies men as walking sperm donors. Another double standard. Narrator is ok, though.

Historia
The infamous Dodd murders are hardly among Eastport's proudest legacies. So when bestselling true-crime author Carolyn Rathbone arrives to research the case for a new book, the locals in the seaside town let her know that she's about as welcome as a spoiled clam. But surely no one would harm a crime writer out of a sense of civic pride--or would they?

Getting darker
Revisado: 07-17-24
I’ve “read”all of the series up to this point. Love the narrator, the stories are good. But the psychosis of the killers is becoming more of a focus, and the descriptions of the murders more detailed. It is a darker feeling and while murder IS dark, that’s not what draws me to mysteries. It’s the MYSTERY part. I may not continue, or at least will take a break.

In her new home, a charmingly dilapidated fixer-upper, she looks forward to repairing old radiators and restoring antique shutters for years to come. Great story and characters; language issue for me.
Revisado: 06-05-24
Love the characters, narrator and story. Talented author. I just wish the misuse of God’s and Jesus’ name wasn’t so prevalent. There was no disrespect of other beliefs, so I can never understand why authors do it to Christians. It certainly doesn’t make the story better, and it colors the experience negatively for me. Otherwise, great work.

Like the characters, the stories manage to get a lot accomplished in a short read/listen, yet still develop characters and plots to a reasonable degree. Fun. Will continue the series!

Liked the storyline, loved the narration, great character development, no major sociopolitical messages, no (English) cursing, mild, non-explicit but communicative sexual undertones, beautiful imagery and romance. Worth every penny and minute!
