Never Underestimate Nathan Lowell
Revisado: 01-15-19
So at the end of Owner’s Share you think “how is Ish going to get through all this?” I think Nate answered that question quite nicely. I’m also starting to wonder just how much of this story has been planned out from the beginning. Is he Ish or Pip or maybe Chief Stevens? Anyway, a fantastic story. I can’t wait for the next one to be available. I’ve been waiting for the return of Brill since the end of Full Share. I have my own wishes for that relationship, but maybe those are just too hopeful. Who knows with Nate in the Captain’s seat!

As good an ending as you can get
Revisado: 04-27-15
I think after listening the entire saga needs a relisten. Not as deep as the other books but it's the end of the story so it's not setting up anything new. I can think of a few better options but it's not my story so I won't tell them here. I'm not a fan of Annamaria and the explaination we get isn't any more satisfying to me. I liked the opening, and Odd is still odd. There's the return of Gypsy Mummy! I loved seeing all the characters from the first three books that were so important in Odd's life.

Fun jaunt
Revisado: 04-22-15
It keeps with the style of the main series but doesn't have much bearing on it. A foray into true science fiction, this novelette has almost no paranormal facets. A second narrative voice provides another view of things as well as telling us parts of the story Odd otherwise wouldn't have known. Well done!

It wasn't easy for Molly being the only girl in Flight Academy, but getting expelled was even worse. Abandoned by her family when she was young and now tossed from the only home she's ever known, her future looks bleak.
But then Molly hears that her father's old starship has turned up halfway across the galaxy. Setting off to retrieve the old craft, she hopes it will hold clues to his disappearance. Accompanying her as a chaperone is Cole, her old flight partner from the Academy.

4 stars good characters with bad behavior
Revisado: 03-27-15
What I mean by my title is that the characters are initially described a certain way, and in the case of Cole sometimes throughout the book, but then their actions don't seem to back it up. Molly is described initially as a very strong woman but then her character makes a 180 even before she's gone anywhere, and then flops back to strong woman. Cole is constantly described by Molly as "paranoid" but I never detected a general paranoia in the writing beyond how a normal person would feel when they have evidence of what looks like a setup. It's kind of hard NOT to be paranoid in those circumstances. Hugh Howey is otherwise a great world builder and story teller. I'm not sure why these characters gave him such a hard time. The setting in the book is varied and sometimes deceptive. Culture shock and misunderstandings abound. Who do you trust? What happened to Molly's parents? Will she ever stop being a cadet and be honest with Cole about her feelings? The ending is a perfect lead-in for a sequel without feeling hokey. I will be adding this series to my wish list!

Historia
The 1964 murder of a nationally known cancer researcher sets the stage for this gripping exposé of medical professionals enmeshed in covert government operations over the course of three decades. Following a trail of police records, FBI files, cancer statistics, and medical journals, this revealing book presents evidence of a web of medical secret-keeping that began with the handling of evidence in the JFK assassination and continued apace....

Cancer, secrets, and Viruses
Revisado: 03-25-15
I'll give the author credit for presenting his opinion in a well-documented and reasonable way. However like all such books it should be taken as an opinion piece for you to decide on your own. All of the evidence cited can be looked up and evaluated. I think we know more about aids and cancer than when this was written and I think more recent research has refuted some of the claims in this book. On the other hand, the story of Mary Sherman is as legitimate those of Henrietta Lax, the JFK assassination, viral cancer (look up the Tazmanian Devil), Lee Harvey Oswald and other mysterious and unknown but signifignt factors in world events. How she died and what she was potentially involved in is a major question that certainly does affect a lot of happenings in the US at the time of WWII through to the assassination of JFK. I don't agree with everything in this book but it's still good and important. If you're looking for historical or medical investigation stories then this is a good book to add to your reading list.

Everyone is deviant
Revisado: 03-23-15
The crime mystery portion of the book is solid and interesting. The interpersonal drama gets a little out of hand. Lizbeth Salander gets irritating overtime. At first I sympathized that she's had a tough time, but her outlook started to grate on me, with no concept of ownership boundaries, overly sexual behavior, and her refusal to believe that nurture plays a part in someone's decision-making later in life. Blomquist isn't a good match for Salander because he's just as bad in the sex department and doesn't know how to tell her that she's out of control. A good friend is honest and up front about the things you do that might need work. How else can you choose whether or not you need to change? Maybe the answer will be no but don't just IGNORE the problem. The story was good enough to keep me to the end but I won't be continuing in the series.

Historia
In a ruined and toxic landscape, a community exists in a giant silo underground, hundreds of stories deep. There, men and women live in a society full of regulations they believe are meant to protect them. Sheriff Holston, who has unwaveringly upheld the silo’s rules for years, unexpectedly breaks the greatest taboo of all: He asks to go outside.

I new this would be good but I was pleasantly surprised that it exceeded my expectation. Some clues I understood early on but the rest had my mind running in circles with nowhere to go. I want to read the rest of the series. I just hope they don't try to top this one. 😉

Historia
This classic tale is a fantastical fable of two dear friends - one of whom goes astray and is literally lost to the north woods, while the other undertakes an epic journey to rescue him. This charming, strange, and wonderful story is a timeless allegory about growing up and the challenges of staying true to one's self, and it served as the wintry inspiration for the blockbuster hit Frozen.

Old Fairy Tale in too many parts
Revisado: 01-23-15
I was surprised at how many sections this story has. It could have been shortened to just the first two and the last stories and it would have been far more concise without cutting out important information. Unlike most retellings there isn't romance involved in the original that we are told about. They are beloved childhood friends. Not my cup of tea these days and like al old, translated stories it feels stilted and abrupt.

A great but complicated story
Revisado: 01-14-15
The performance and writing was exceptional, but the history of the two main species in the story was so confusing I have to listen to it again. I'm not certain in my mind how everything is laid out in time and place. Abbie is a great writer but I think she overdid herself this time. Still 4/5 stars. I loved Storm and his group of friends. I wanted to root for certain character but the more I got into the story the less I understood what was going on. I think I need a second listen.
