Another Whiny woman that won't tell the truth
Revisado: 10-12-24
It calls itself a "RomCom" but there's no humor, just another woman wringing her hands b/c she can't be guaranteed a life of true love but she creates the angst & drama herself. I'm so over those silly stories!
I only finished it to see if the somewhat intriguing substory would end pleasantly. I was not disappointed that way.
The two narrators did a beautiful job with voices & energies. I sobriety wander back into this style story again. Too aggravating.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Heartwarming
Revisado: 08-21-24
At first all I wanted was to hear from the Octopus. Soon I bonded with Tova & Cameron. The end was perfectly crafted.
Please try this book. I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It left me feeling very happy.

Historia
Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

Beautiful
Revisado: 03-01-24
This book begins with awful descriptions of foot binding but the story is beautiful and filled with many examples of truth in that era of China, difficult as they may be to hear. I grew to love Lady Tan and her story, feeling sad when the story ended.
Lady Tan's work with herbs was very interesting to me as the herbs she references are real and the remedies they are described for are correct. I wish I had her book of herbal remedies!
Jennifer Lim is very talented in bringing several women's & children's voices to the story in a way you can understand the differences in who is speaking. Justin Chien is equally talented..
I will probably listen to this again in the future. Thoroughly enjoyed it and hope to find other books that are similar.

Historia
Daniel Martin has never forgotten his childhood encounters with Frank Watkins, the man who built his family a summer home out of cardboard and plywood. Frank's gaze was oddly confusing, as if he was attempting to discern the proper way to behave because he didn't know how to respond in a human manner. Since Frank obviously wasn't an alien, young Daniel thought maybe the man was crazy. In the end, Daniel would learn the terrifying truth about Frank Watkins. And as an adult, Daniel is about to discover there are more of them out there.

A Bit Rough But Not Too Horrific
Revisado: 08-03-22
This is not my genre so it's not really fair to criticize.
Storyline good with a few scenes I could have done without. Well written enough that despite wanting to quit after those difficult events I kept on. I enjoy the narrator's style & voice.
End is satisfying. I looked forward to getting back to the story. Good character creation.

Another great Mark Rashid book
Revisado: 07-16-22
Mark's evolution through the books I've read so far is enlightening & thoughtful.
The narration is a bit stilted. I would wish that it was read with some feeling. I enjoy books where I am not continually reminded of the narrator's existence.
This is still definitely worth listening to.
