This was a straight DNF. O.M.G. the main character is a simpering idiot and the hero is a fak boy and the story is just so far fetched and terrible. I love dark romance, but this is bad fan fiction. The narrator was great though. Good on Ava.

Love the Bubble of Xeni and Mason. They had great communication, but I struggled with the secondary characters. They felt one dimensional and some characters didn't have true purpose in the story. It was still sweet though.
Great Narrator!

Podcast Notes for Romance At a Glance Podcast

Trigger warning
First off I have to say that this is a very loose interpretation of Persuasion. If you are coming with Jane Austen feels then this is not the book for you
However it is a well written story and it works really well.
But I’m torn on my review. If this were a women's fiction book I would have given it 4.5 to 5 stars. The complexity of the world building and character development I thought was superb. Sonali can write. Authors should take note of this woman and how she crafts 3 dimensional characters.

The things that worked for me.
Ashna and her mom trying to find their way back to each other.
The mom sharing her truth though I wish she was brave enough to have just told Ashna without the secret overhearing.
Ashna being as traumatized into adulthood as she was.
She has a narcissistic parent and it is hard to tell you are being manipulated as a child.
I love how vulnerable Rico was and when he told her he didn’t want to be abandoned by her.
There is a disservice because there is no way to know this book has fade to black scenes.
I don not ever want to read fade to black books.
However that is a personal preference.

What Didn’t Work for me
Fade to black sex scenes
Summer quickie need sex and sweet little romance
This book was not for me during summer quickie.
To many heavy subjects in one book.
That it took until the end of the book for people to communicate.
I did not feel like Rico and Ashna earned their love and reconciliation. Because we spent too much time talking about the book.

** spoiler alert ** *Spoilers* These are my podcast show notes for this book. Only really legible to me soooo enjoy! check out our podcast RomanceAtAGlance.com
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Favorite parts of the book:
Books called Softies in which there is no sexual assault. What so ever. Not even a hint of a guy rescuing a girl from an overly sexually pushy dude.
I enjoyed the fact that Pilar is afro-Latina from Cuba and that her family was a slightly shady bunch of people where everyone had a skill to help out the group.
I love that is Pilar stealing his boat and not the standard girl stowing away on a pirate ship dressed as a boy trope. LOL
I love that the love at first sight is the sword fight and subsequent proposal. It wasn’t far fetched to me.
The segregated train car.
I love when pilar threatens to kill the man who tried to assassinate Noah.
I wished Pilars badassery was used more. I wish the book had a little bit more action. Pilar was essentially a fugitive and yet no one ever came after her. And she had little opportunity for her cut throat talents.
I love that Pilar and Noah had very little conflict. It was a nice change of pace.
When they did have conflict though it felt kinda weird. When he had the nightmare and wanted to be left alone. Didn’t seem like a far fetched notion or idea.
Now when he left for two weeks, I wanted him to return and find Pilar gone or moved in with a sister inlaw or something. I like that in her inner monologue
I Like that the brother is having a hard time handling his kid lol.
I love that they were in love most of the book and it was more about her change in status and dynamic.

Didn’t like

The plot line with Lavinia. WTF it was that super catty girl who is evil and 1 dimensional thing again. I wish there was a bit more of a build up with that or a little more mystery.
This notion that if he went back to the island a while he would be fixed of his trauma.
WHAT HAPPENED TO HER HOPES AND DREAMS!!!! “a wife goes where her husband goes” (WHO THE HELL BODY SNATCHED PILAR)
She got pregnant and then what????? Why not a form of Birth control and keep fighting and have conflict with her husband a bit more. Maybe about when to settle down or how involved to be or maybe he helps her be a MF rebel.
This book Ended hella week for me. I mean just where was the fiery Pilar! Where was the passion that Noah fell in love with? Where is part 2!

He talks in the beginning about wanting a wife who would sail the seas with him… why didn’t she become his biz partner? Why didn’t they try to prevent pregnancy so they could do that for a while?

Heroine Rating: 3 - She started off as a 5 and then slowly gave away all her will to her husband. BLAH

Hero Rating?: 2 stars. Mc Dreamy
I like that he took care of Pilar. I don’t like that he separated from her on the train. But overall he was a kind husband and his family was cool.
But I didn’t like him leaving her for 2 weeks then disappearing from her to find closure until she went from not showing to showing her pregnancy. WTF.

Wanted to Like this more than I did *Spoilers*

- I like the premise of the book.
-This book should not be in the romance section. I’m going to give it a bad review because it was miscatogorized. It is women’s fiction or Young Adult. A cute little story of a family of hot dudes and one falls in love with the clerk cool. But dear gawd a missed opportunity for steam.
-I like that they are a tribe of brothers, do I smell sequel?
-I loved to see brown people with brown people issues in harlem dealing and worrying about bad landlords and gentrification.
-The brothers being as diverse as they were gave me some hope for some good swirl action later. I wish other characters were introduced for them.
-I wanted to like this book a 5 outta 5.
-This book was too dam slow. It was over half way through the book when they kiss for the first time.
-The book was front loaded with backstory and information that I felt could have been spread out throughout the book mor authentically.
-The foreplay was nice and then…. WHATTTT fade to black????? Give me the sex. That's why I’m here.
-I never got the chemistry from Jesse. He seemed immature and Kerry seemed unequally yoked with him. Now Lucas...yes
-The characters were very 1 dimensional for me. For example Erica the girl who liked Jesse was a stereotypical mean girl. It doesn’t read authentic. There was a great opportunity to see the dynamics of the brothers bond and we saw little of that.
-This burn was too slow and the writing style for me felt choppy.

Butch and Marissa
Our Podcast www.romanceataglance.com/

Socialite Marissa has never controlled her own agency. She reminds me of an Amish kid just learning about the world for real. First she was the rejected wife of the king, her brother kicks her out of her home and then she keeps getting rejected by butch. Her struggle to find her voice and confidence is agonizing for me, but so worth the journey. She has a turning point when she burns up all her old clothes and old life, puts her foot down with her boundaries regarding butch and seals the deal into her power when she takes over the vote later and tells them to have SEVERAL SEATS when the council is trying to sequester female vampires. Not TODAY! Watching Marissa grow up in this book was the redemption I need for her after book 1. She can’t go out like this.

I give Marissa 4 Peaches

Butch is not my favorite character, but I did enjoy learning about his background. They explained more about his family and how he was abused and later on about how he was the product of his mother's affair. I was annoyed at how much he would go back and with wanting to be with Marrissa and then rejecting her. Gurl already has rejection issues. The feeding scenes were annoying AF to. There is literally a whole group of women (the Chosen) whose job it is to feed the Brotherhood. Why so much angst.

I give butch 3 eggplants

This book for me is a building block book. Not my favorite but the world building is so necessary for us to enjoy future books. This is where we get more info on Qhuinn and Blaylock, John Matthew, Xhex, and Rehvenge. Some of my favorite characters.

The series is worth the read.

***I will add a Trigger Warning for anyone not wanting to hear about Molestation or Sexual Trauma. (This book addresses it) SPOILERS

I LMFAO reading this book. It’s not a book you want to read while multitasking. From the hilarious banter, to the well written sex scenes this book was a delight. Penny’s menagerie of rejected and wounded pets adds to the hilarity of the story as they are constantly causing a ruckus…. And let’s not forget Penny’s horrid vegetarian food.
Gabriel Duke is a remarkable practical and an I love the way he tries to maneuver around Penny. The scene in which he hires bad actors to pretend to be farmers was especially hilarious. I highly Recommend.
Vanilla Sex: The steaminess level is about a 3 outta 5 Peaches/Eggplants

This book was blahhhhh for me. The sex was non-descriptive and barely there. The hero was whiney at best with daddy issues and the heroine had a barely there back story. I don't recommend this book at all. Skip it. 1 out of five Eggplant emojis.

I struggled through this book.
First off, the concept was good and had potential, but oh God that's where it stopped. There was no excitment or originality. No steaminess or sexual tension and was so anticlimactic at the end. talk about womp. womp.
