Historia
When Melissa Gould’s husband, Joel, was unexpectedly hospitalized, she could not imagine how her life was about to change. Overwhelmed with uncertainty as Joel’s condition tragically worsened, she offered him the only thing she could: her love and devotion. Her dedication didn’t end with his death. Melissa soon realized that her and Joel’s love lived on. Melissa found she didn’t fit the typical mold of widowhood or meet the expectations of mourning. She didn’t look like a widow or act like a widow, but she felt like one. Melissa was widowish.

More than just a Grief Book!
Revisado: 02-10-25
Yes, this is a helpful book for anyone who has experienced grief - especially widowhood. But this was a well told story that makes it more than just “a grief book.” It’s a love story and a story about a strong woman. Loved it!

Historia
The Liars’ Club took the world by storm and raised the art of the memoir to an entirely new level, bringing about a dramatic revival of the form. Karr’s comic childhood in an east Texas oil town brings us characters as darkly hilarious as any of J. D. Salinger’s—a hard-drinking daddy, a sister who can talk down the sheriff at age twelve, and an oft-married mother whose accumulated secrets threaten to destroy them all.

Mary Karr is the Queen of Memoir
Revisado: 08-13-23
Read this book many moons ago, and loved it. Revisited it in audio form and had a whole new experience, listening to Ms Karr herself narrate. Wow. Moving and funny and scary and profound. Humans make good stories. The end.

Thoroughly Enjoyed This Book!
Revisado: 04-09-23
This book was funny, fun, motivating, and even got me in the feels a few times as Tom Foreman takes us on his running journey with his daughter and beyond. His experience as a journalist on camera ensures that he is the perfect voice to narrate his own book. (Not always the case with authors) As a weekend warrior runner/mom - I devoured this audiobook.

Historia
There's no other book like this. Longtime running writer Scott Douglas marshals expert advice (including his own, cultivated from more than 100,000 miles of personal experience), and a growing body of scientific research to show how running can make us happier. How? Everyone knows that running builds stronger muscles and a healthier heart; science now shows it also helps develop a healthier brain. For those struggling with depression and anxiety, a consistent running routine can enhance the mental-health benefits of talk therapy, antidepressants, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Really Enjoyed this Book!
Revisado: 03-28-23
I actually kept this sitting in my library for many weeks (months). Not sure why I couldn’t get into it at the very start. Likely the fact that I knew on some level that I had fallen into a deep running slump after the death of my 11 year old son. A slump is actually too kind. I had stopped running. Deep depression. Grief. No one could blame me. I have been battling the worst of the worst.
But something motivated me to buy this book. Then after months of not reading it - something motivated me to finally dig in. And I couldn’t be more grateful to the author.
I found this book to be enjoyable, smart, and motivational without the obvious cheesy “you got this” platitudes. I may have to listen to it again. It was that helpful.
Happy to say I’m slowly starting back to running thanks to this book. I will always carry my grief with me, but why not take it for a run. Thank you, Scott Douglas.

Historia
Carla Karolac is doing just fine. Having escaped the clutches of her controlling mother and founded a successful writing retreat in which participants are confined to windowless cells until they hit their daily word count, she lives a comfortable, if solitary, existence. If only her therapist, Toonie, would stop going on about Carla's nonexistent love life and start addressing her writer’s block, she might be able to make some progress. But then Carla finds Toonie murdered, and suddenly her unfinished memoir is the least of her concerns.

I love dark comedy, so I thought this would be for me. Unfortunately I found it very lacking in dark or comedy. There’s very little character development, but a lot of characters.

I needed this book!
Revisado: 10-02-22
Author does not talk down to you and acknowledges that yeah - we actually know a lot of this stuff already (eat your veggies, sleep, exercise, etc) - but with her humor and friendly nature, she walks you clearly through HOW to implement what we already know.
I used to be fit, and after a couple of years of tragedy, I lost the plot. This book (and it’s humorous nature) is helping me reclaim my fit self.

Historia
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

Historia
The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

Loved the non-pushy, non-preachy way that Dr B was able to explore the world of nutrition.
Such great info. I’ve tried every eating style out there, and my own experience corroborates his findings. Highly recommend.

Historia
A. J. Jacobs tackles his most challenging experiment yet: a yearlong mission to radically improve every element of his body and mind - from his brain to his fingertips to his abs. First, he had to tackle a complicated web of diet and exercise advice, most which is nonsensical, unproven, and contradictory. Second, he had to consult a team of medical advisers. And finally, he had to subject himself, over the course of two years, to a grueling regimen of exercises and a range of diets and nutritional plans.

Enjoyable and Informative… and Funny!!
Revisado: 07-06-21
I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Jacobs attacks the self-imposed task to be the healthiest man in the world and the journey is hilarious.
I like that he covers the whole spectrum. Not just the usual: diet and exercise, though that is a theme throughout the book. He looks into eye health, skin health, ear health, and even to a degree - emotional health.
He keeps it true to a columnist reporting on a fad, and while he takes part in many experiences and experiments, he shines a vulnerable light on how excited he gets as well as how unenthused his wife gets about each new health venture.
He is never prescriptive, never lands on “THE” answer. Only studies, counter studies, and his anecdotal guinea pig experience. For that reason, I feel I can trust him. I myself have purchased a treadmill desk thanks to his experience and the fact that it’s one of the things that he stuck with in his 2 year journey with this book.
I highly recommend this read.
