Unlike the first book there was not a large amount of preamble, introductions, and scene setting.
Very entertaining and a great second installment.

While I was hesitant to get this book after book 3 of the Hunger Games trilogy, which in my opinion was a distant third place of the three HG books, The Ballard of Song Birds and Snakes was excellent. Good story, good characters, good twists and a compelling flow that got you invested.
The only draw back was the spoken word oratory used each time there was supposed to be singing. Would have been nice to have a singer supplement the book reader for these parts. But that is nitpicking.
Read or listen to this book. Definitely worth the time.

Part western, part murder mystery, and part history lesson. I found this to be a rare book that keeps you engaged without sensationalizing a story. The mystery slowly unfolds while providing a history of the frontier many have never heard before. When the mystery is solved the author brings you full circle by tying up as many lose ends as possible and even adding his own investigative findings to the history of the Osage and the reign of terror that had befallen them in the 1920s.

Overall this is a very solid conclusion to the trilogy. The story line and characters have been consistently good from the start.
For those comparing this to the Red Rising books, I think that is off base. These books stand on their own. There are similarities but very general similarities.
The performances, as with book 2, are very inconsistent. Some readers are fantastic while two are so stiff that it takes away from the characters a bit.
This a great series. Read it. Enjoy it. Recommend it.

Took a flier on The First Sister and I’m glad I did. While the performance can be somewhat frustrating, the story and writing more than makes up for it. This is science fiction fantasy with a modern day societal commentary. That may turn some off but the commentary is delivered in a subtle yet stated manner. Very well done by the author.
Give this book a read or a listen if you enjoyed the Red Rising saga. While I wouldn’t rank it as high as Red Rising it is excellent.

Is he a little strange? Yes. Is he entertaining as the narrator? Yes. Is his story interesting? Yes. So all in all you have a relatively short entertaining book with great narration. Well worth a listen.

The historical significance of telling and retelling the stories of the atrocities of WWIl is very important. In this book there is a humanization of some history may judge harshly, the demonization of others who history may not notice, redemption for some characters and failure for others.
Historical fiction can be used to change the past or to bring the past into the present. Kristen Hannah does a masterful job of building characters and story lines that gently draw you in and make you care. I had no expectations heading into this book but after finishing I am completely satisfied. It is easy to understand the tremendous ratings this book receives. If you enjoy reading about and being immersed in WWll Europe then this book is a can’t miss.
