Historia
Brady Coyne never meant to become the private lawyer to New England's upper crust, but after more than a decade working for Florence Gresham and her friends, he has developed a reputation for discretion that the rich cannot resist. He is fond of Mrs. Gresham - unflappable, uncouth, and never tardy with a check - and he has seen her through her husband's suicide and her first son's death in Vietnam. But he has never seen her crack until the day her second son, George, leaps into the sea at jagged Charity's Point.

Not very good, too gory and too explicit.
You don’t care about the characters at all so the main character protecting them was very unsatisfactory.
We’re supposed to be sympathetic to to a terrorist-murderer because she’s hot?
The “romance” was definitely a window into the male fantasy though, so that was interesting as a study but enjoyable as a story.

Historia
In her daring first novel, the youngest Brontë sister drew upon her own experiences to tell the unvarnished truth about life as a governess. Like Agnes Grey, Anne Bronte was a young middle-class Victorian lady whose family fortunes had faltered. Like so many other unmarried women of the 19th century, Bronte accepted the only "respectable" employment available - and entered a world of hardship, humiliation, and loneliness.

Slow Start

Took a long time to get to the main thrust of the story and then it was just kind of a simple romance.
I’d actually give it 3.5 stars

Lynn Austin writes an adventure story!
Revisado: 03-17-25
I didn’t love the ending, but I listened to this in one day so it was plenty compelling!
And I don’t even like stories about people in the south. Highly recommend!

Just a lighthearted story

Zero historical or geographical accuracy but a diverting story, I guess. The characters were unlikable and unbelievable.

Historia
Trollope's classic novel features Reverend Septimus Harding, the elderly warden of the Barchester alms-house. However, for a man devoting himself to helping the poor, Reverend Harding's salary is rather lucrative. Aiming to ease his conscience and quiet his neighbors' whispers, he decides to divest himself of all the income he earns at the alms-house. But this decision causes unforeseen complications. The first of his Barsetshire series, this novel provides a detailed, gently satirical portrayal of 19th century British life.

Very Cozy if Slightly Dissatisfying
Revisado: 02-21-25
I liked this the best of the three Anthony Trollope novels I’ve listed to, so far, it was very interesting and had that cozy, detail-oriented Trollope style.
The ending was a little dissatisfying but I suppose everyone did get their just due…

Fantastic Story - Does Require a Strong Stomach
Revisado: 02-04-25
This was a great story, I thoroughly enjoyed this and the ending was finally rewarding but it was a long, hard journey to the end.
Just hearing some of the accounts of the hardship of pioneers can be unsettling and this book definitely did not spare the reader’s sensibilities.
Still worth the read and I’m sure I’ll listen to this again in the future.

Charming Account
Revisado: 02-04-25
Of course my favorite parts were the glimpses into the short-lived, likely-unacknowledged love between Isabella Bird and James Nugent.
The scenery descriptions were great but from a more objective point of view, the best part was Bird’ observations and descriptions of the inhabitants of the Rocky Mountains in the 1870’s.
Highly recommend!
Audience Warning: There is one reference to the notorious Donner party/cannibalism, I just skipped ahead two or three minutes and didn’t miss the story but avoided anything gruesome.

Cute Story - Bad Male Reader
Revisado: 12-20-24
This is another super-cute title by Kate Hewitt, and I enjoyed Harriet’s story more than Rachel’s. Highly recommend!
BUT I hated the male reader, he made Harriet sound so whiny and teenager-ish.
Also it really makes the story chopped up to be jumping back and forth all the time.
Plus he sounded fairly…gay, which doesn’t exactly make the male romantic hero sound very attractive to women listeners.
Would have cut the male reader altogether.

Very Depressing
Revisado: 08-27-24
You know how people say that when they watch some shows they feel their IQs being lowered? When listening to this story I felt like I could feel my respectability, decency, ambition and straight out morals being lowered. Not redeeming at all just sad and janky and depressing.
