Historia
Living in the remote town of Tierra del Sol is dangerous, especially in the criatura months, when powerful spirits roam the desert and threaten humankind. But Cecelia Rios has always believed there was more to the criaturas, much to her family’s disapproval. After all, only brujas - humans who capture and control criaturas - consort with the spirits, and brujeria is a terrible crime. When her older sister, Juana, is kidnapped by El Sombrerón, a powerful dark criatura, Cece is determined to bring Juana back.

A Heartfelt Story of Embracing Who You Are
Revisado: 06-10-24
Having just finished reading Witchlings (and remembering some of the characters like El Sombrerón from Charlie Hernandez) I was slow to get in to this book. However, after a few chapters I grew to really adore the characters. Kaela Rivera is a masterful writer (think Rick Riordan and The Trials of Apollo) and Cece’s journey to save her sister (leading to her finding herself) was enchanting. On to book 2!

Historia
With Ravenskill hosting this year's games, all eyes are on Seven Salazar, Valley Pepperhorn and Thorn Laroux: the most famous Spares in the Twelve Towns. Thorn is ready to compete as a fashion champion, but when a hex is used to turn her fellow champions to stone, suspicion lands on the Witchlings. As the Witchlings attempt to unravel the mystery of the stonifications, future Uncle Seven is harboring a dangerous secret: While she's supposed to be able to communicate with animals, the voices she hears most clearly belong to monstruos, and one spine-chilling voice is the loudest of all.

New and old characters make this an enjoyable read. (There’s even a Harry Potter type Yule Ball in this Goblet of Fire reminiscent sequel.) Anxiously waiting for part III.

Somewhere between NeverMoor/The Worst Witch/Harry Potter
Revisado: 05-21-24
This is a very cute book with latinx characters in the style of Nevermoor/The Worst Witch/Harry Potter. While the book never rises to any of those levels (from characters to world building), it was an entertaining read for a younger reader who might not always get to see themselves (or their culture) represented in fantasy books.

Sweet, Simple, and Funny

The narrator makes this book such a wonderful read. Would highly recommend if you enjoy books about children with disAbilities (think “Tune it Out”).

Historia
Lou Montgomery has the voice of an angel, or so her mother tells her and anyone else who will listen. But Lou can only hear the fear in her own voice. She's never liked crowds or loud noises or even high fives; in fact, she's terrified of them, which makes her pretty sure there's something wrong with her. When Lou crashes their pickup on a dark and snowy road, child services separate the mother-daughter duo. Now she has to start all over again at a fancy private school far away from anything she's ever known.

Sweet Elementary Age Story

A beautiful story about self-acceptance. (Rex Ogle, author of “Free Lunch”, recommended this book in an interview.)

Historia
A distinctive new voice: Rex Ogle's story of starting middle school on the free lunch program is timely, heartbreaking, and true. Free Lunch is the story of Rex Ogle's first semester in sixth grade. Rex and his baby brother often went hungry, wore secondhand clothes, and were short of school supplies, and Rex was on his school's free lunch program. Grounded in the immediacy of physical hunger and the humiliation of having to announce it every day in the school lunch line, Rex's is a compelling story of a more profound hunger - that of a child for his parents' love and care.

A hard story beautifully delivered
Revisado: 04-24-22
This was a hard story to hear, but I am grateful to have heard Rex’s story as it reminds me that we are not always aware of other people’s realities.
