Historia
The ninth floor. Nine armies, each led by rich and powerful aliens from across the galaxy. Each team has one objective: to capture and hold the castle at the very center of the battlefield. Strategy, alliances, pitched battles, and, of course, betrayal ... It all makes for great fun and even greater television. After all, none of these powerful aliens really die when they’re playing war. Except this time. This time, winner takes all. Those who fall, stay in the ground.

Never disappointed
Revisado: 04-20-25
Unlike some series tha tend to wane after several books, This 7th installment didn't disappoint. The characters continue to grow as we keep learning about them. The stakes get higher and the action keeps coming. And the narration is, as always, Top Knotch. I'm only sad I have to wait for the next book

Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues - a bee, a key, and a sword.

Lovely story, narrator didn't work for me
Revisado: 12-20-24
I feel like the main narrator went to the Christopher Walken school of sentence pacing and inflection. I wish I had read it myself, or that one of the interlude narrators had done the whole story.

crappy portrayal of women
Revisado: 10-25-24
I made it about 45 minutes into the audiobook - i guess that's 1/3 of the way into section 1? - before getting too bored to continue.
I was going to expound on that to warn people away, but nah. Don't care enough, other than:
Girlfriend of MC assumed he r*ped women while pirating, and was cool with that (explicitly stated so, using the r word) but he was like "no chicks were avail there, but if I'd had the chance I'd have been last in the line for r*ping, which gross, so oh well"
And still what got me was the boredom even more than THAT abominable exchange.
Chicks are supposedly in power, which they spend all their time on harassing the men for being cheating jerks
don't let anyone fool you into thinking these are "powerful" women

Told from the perspective of a cat wizard
Revisado: 01-15-24
TWs: death, and harm to animals.
Sensitive readers note: the main characters have to deal with deaths and they are not gentle and offscreen. One primarily (but deeply) affects the main character; another is very traumatic and spelled out in detail.
Outside of those horrifying moments, this is a mostly positive and wholesome story. It's fun living inside a cat's head, and as a cat owner, I found the majority of the cat-isms to be very accurate! (with the exception that cats are partially color blind, seeing mainly blue and yellow; one can handwave the descriptions of red or green things as a special skill the wizards have, perhaps)

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Revisado: 05-29-23
Every time I see a post asking "what audiobook is better than its paper version", this book is always the top answer with dozens or hundreds of votes, depending on how much attention the post gets. I finally bit the bullet and tried it out. A chapter or two in, I thought, "oh, it's Ray Porter's phenomenal acting." Then, around chapter..... 5?.... it hit. They were right. I finished this 16 hour audio book in 2 days of listening.
Fun story, endearing characters, minimal cussing and adult moments and no on-screen violence, so i don't feel bad sharing it with my teens.
Absolutely recommend to ask sci fi fans.

On a little-known planet, Archmage Varic Vallenar casts a grand spell to empower himself with the magical abilities of his alternate selves. The ritual works too well, granting Varic not only the magic but also the memories from six lives. Including their gruesome deaths. Now, Varic has power greater than any wizard in galactic history, but he knows that won’t be enough. The enemies he faced in those alternate lives were apocalyptic in scale. Terrors of technology and magic. Nothing that he, or anyone, can defeat.

Historia
The Winter Queen of Faerie has manipulated Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden into accepting a case to solve a murder and stop a war between the courts of Summer and Winter that could have literally earth shattering consequences. His own soul is up for grabs. Dresden must dig deep to discover that at time a willingness to accept a little help from your friends, be they a cub pack of werewolves, old loves in sheep's clothing, or a battalion of pizza loving dewdrop fairies, is a very good thing.

Book Great. Narration decent, but lots of issues
Revisado: 04-26-22
Love the Dresden series, and this is no exception.
I had little time to finish the physical book, so I got this audio to listen to in the car. I honestly didn't look at who the narrator was for this when i purchased the audiobook. And the name didn't hit me until I heard the ending.
Then I was SHOCKED that this was supposedly a professionally produced audiobook.
The narration felt like it was all done without any takes. Several instances of awkward pauses in the middle of a sentence. I don't so much mind hearing a narrator breathe in. We all do it. But there was so much that could have been cut out. I'm pretty sure there were a few mispronounced words as well.
But It was the pasty mouth noises that almost drove me batty. I really feel like this could have been edited out somewhat with a good audio engineer with some kind of noise limiter or noise gate.
I do like the acting and the characterization James brings to the work, but unfortunately that was overshadowed by all of the clicks and sticky mouth and breath noises. it is just SO distracting.
I don't feel like he had a good producer to have him re-take some of the reads, or not enough of them.
I don't fault James for the reading as much as I do his producers.
If you can get over the mouth noises, it's a good story.
I won't/cant' listen to another Dresden novel if narrated and produced by the same people.
I'm back to the hard copies, no matter how long it takes me.
