The Woman by the Lake story is decent. I love Misted Pines series. The female protagonist, Nadia, is very likable, but I feel like the story could've done more. I didn't love the male protagonist, Riggs. I don't like a good time guy. And I couldn't quite understand how they fit because Nadia likes to be at home but Riggs likes to party it up. But all Kristen Ashley books are enjoyable.

The biggest problem with this book is the male narrator. I purchased the Audible book because I was re-reading the series before book number four came out. The audiobook is almost unlistenable due to the male narrator. He's overdramatic and almost yelling his lines. And there's a weird cadence and stops and starts. Did not like it at all. I purchased it for $1.99 because it was on sale due to the new release. I would not buy it for more nor waste your credit.

I enjoy the story as I do most Sawyer Bennett books. The only thing that bothered me throughout the book was the heroine's age of 23. That just feels so young, especially to be a writer of romance novels. And the fact that she had been writing them for three years just didn't seem to make sense. Basically she had published her first book at 20 and became successful in three years. I thought about it through the entire story, but the characters didn't feel 23 and 24. They did feel older. I also struggled with the fact that the hero went from a party boy to a relationship guy in essentially a day.

I understand that not all heroes can have the same personality. I'm sure it's difficult to write them so that each one feels new and different. But the hero in this book is an asshole and insufferable. The author tries to explain it away because he's so smart. Jerk is a jerk, no matter their intelligence.

The spec is slightly better than the previous book in the series. There at least is a romance to it. But once the couple gets together, it's all about real life arguments. Not keeping the house, clean enough, not cooking, dinner, bringing in your dirty work items. I'm reading a historical romance, I don't want who's going to cook dinner arguments.

This book is excruciating, and I only finished because it's part of a series. There's very little romance. The story is about twin girls and their cousin growing up and maturing. The main character twins are spoiled and annoying. I don't mind growth in a character, but I'm not interested in adult romance book being so focused on young adults, learning my lessons. I'm not reading YA.

I cannot believe we went through seven books of having one lady be the villain, and in one scene, she shows up with an apology about her behavior. All of a sudden, she understands how horrible her actions to others have been. She terrorizes the town for decades, and in one election she sees the error of her ways. She almost kills the lady, and we're all OK with her apology. I have listened to this whole series because it's an easy listen to and nothing big happens. But the ending of this book had me screaming.

The main character was very difficult to like. A lot of the conversations were why are you mad at me, you know why. I just liked her immensely, and I had to do some reflection to make sure that I wasn't being misogynistic. But no! Instead of using her words like an adult, she runs. She blames the male main character for everything! Leave me alone! I am mad at you because you left me alone... type of things!

Shelbourne's cursing was a lot, and I love a good sailor mouth. I very much enjoyed the first three books of the series and disappointed in the fourth.

The performance is horrible. Another reviewer mentioned the American accent. It's almost like the narrator has a lisp when she's trying to use that accent. The tone she uses for the male character makes him seem even worse of an ass than he is. At first, my issue was with the reading and not the story. But as the story progressed that became stupid as well. When Pembroke's father comes to visit, why would he tell Victoria that his son is a jerk, and he's only there because he made him come? The man wants an heir. How is he going to get an heir if he makes Victoria hate her husband. There's definitely a reason why this is a free book.

I don’t understand why people love this book so much. The main character was so frustrating. I understand she had a lot of trauma but she wanted to deal with it by ignoring it and pushing it away. That’s the worst thing you can do and not a good example for people dealing with real problems. Just when you think she’s making progress, she pushes the hero away again and again and again. It’s very frustrating that instead of talking with the hero, she tries to do everything on her own. Frustrating!!!

Sigh…the female narrator

I have never read a book by this author, and was very pleased. The story and characters were great. BUT … the female narrator was very distracting and annoying. It seemed like she added, or stretched out the last syllable of every word almost like some weird valley girl accent. If I had just read the book instead of listening to it, I wouldn’t have anything negative to say.
