Why some authors should not be narrators

The subject matter of this book is interesting, but the audio is a great example of why narration should generally be left to professionals. The author's intonation is repetitive and unrelated to the content, and the phrasing often makes the text harder to understand. The period he's chosen to highlight is fascinating and pivotal in history; however, the writing is a string of clichés. In fairness, I should add that I ended up returning this only a couple of chapters in, so maybe it got way better later in the book.

Heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time, the heart of this book is the inner journey of Hiram Walker, the character who relates the saga of his birth into bondage to his wrenching escape and work with the underground liberation movement. Hiram's growing awareness of how deeply the poisonous tendrils of slavery had penetrated his own perceptions of the world is the profoundly moving story within the story. The narrator, Joe Morton, lifts the elegant writing to another level by making every character distinctive, believable, and complex. An added treat is Morton's singing the songs of the "tasked' that come up from time to time in the story. Memorable listening!

A moving story of a man approaching the end of his life making peace with tumultuous incidents in his past, which he'd left unexamined until a coincidental meeting thrusts them back into his awareness. Limpid, spare writing, and moving narration. A book that deepens the reader's understanding of how our evolving perspective on events can change what they mean to us and how they tangibly affect our life.

Good narration and an OK story, but to keep the suspense up the story is dragged on and on--feels manipulative. Could have been about 3/4 of its length.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd recommend it to a Jo Nesbo fan, but for someone who isn't already hooked on Harry Hole, I'd not necessarily recommend.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cockroaches?

Some grisly torture scenes.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of John Lee?

Someone who doesn't ham up every line. I've enjoyed his renditions of other Nesbo books (as well as other authors'), but this narration was quite annoying.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No.

Any additional comments?

This was one of the least gripping Harry Hole novels, but still a decently good listen.
