Fascinating Point of View
Revisado: 07-10-23
Obviously, one’s beliefs matter when listening to this.
I enjoyed information about class proximity loyalty rather than pointing fingers.
That said, what isn’t said is that legislative payoffs i.e. contributions matter. Big money talks loudest.
Yes, perhaps legislators or their staff may be inept. Democrats got what they deserved. Republicans got what they wanted. Citizens got hammered.

Historia
Not since the last American troops left Vietnam have we faced such a sudden vacuum in our foreign policy—not only of authority, but also of explanations of what happened, and what the future holds. Few analysts are better poised to address this moment than Noam Chomsky and Vijay Prashad, intellectuals and critics whose work spans generations and continents.

Evidence, clearly presented, and passionately read. A treasure to be read and reread. If you read this, i believe that you’ll have your politically challenged or buttressed.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

So good.
Revisado: 05-28-19
I enjoyed this book more than I’d thought I would.
I listened to the book as an Audible book over a 2-day period of time. When people would talk to me I'd pause but was anxious to get back to it. I drove; I listened. I exercised at the gym; I listened.
The book seemed like a conversation with someone I admired and wanted to know more about.
When I was finished I sent a copy to a relative.

Historia
In a narrative as beguiling and mysterious as memory itself - shadowed and luminous at once - we follow the story of 14-year-old Nathaniel, and his older sister, Rachel. In 1945, just after World War II, they stay behind in London when their parents move to Singapore, leaving them in the care of a mysterious figure named The Moth. They suspect he might be a criminal, and they grow both more convinced and less concerned as they come to know his eccentric crew of friends: men and women joined by a shared history of unspecified service during the war.

Dancing and romanticized nuanced of a reflective mind
Revisado: 01-13-19
I loved the way that incomplete mental constructs were pieced together and how much Nathaniel wanted to discover his parents, mother especially, to find out where he fit in. Nice to be able to see some history through Rose’s eyes and mind.
The richness of his descriptions through the eyes of key characters were lovely.
Darter did protect after all. One can only wonder what Agnes’s thoughts were. Nice to have so much to think about.

Historia
Faced with the ceaseless stream of news about war, crime, and terrorism, one could easily think we live in the most violent age ever seen. Yet as New York Times bestselling author Steven Pinker shows in this startling and engaging new work, just the opposite is true: violence has been diminishing for millennia and we may be living in the most peaceful time in our species's existence.

Makes sense to me, mostly
Revisado: 08-01-16
I believe in one's better angels. That being said, you'll understand my bias. I also was fascinated at some of my respected "others" who disagreed with Mr. Pinker.
It is totally understandable that detailed people with limited perspectives of a particular region or city might exhibit a temporary violent outburst. Still, as is explained and documented in this book, the broad brush strokes and overall general nature of humans it being won over by "better angels".
Media sends messages of fear and of civilization so it is understandable how other points of viewing civilization might be held.
There is, however, more than enough information to convince me that Steven Pinker is spot on relative to the majority of his points.
I'm now drawn to him, his YouTube presentations and interviews and his other books.
I'm now a fan one will follow him.
This book is understandable and important, especially with someone who has an uncle Howard (a curmudgeon).
Terrorism is an issue that perhaps needs more reflection and understanding by leaders. If this book were more fully understood, I think we'd be more successful.

Historia
A breakneck race against time…and an implacable enemy. An anonymous young woman murdered in a run-down hotel, all identifying characteristics dissolved by acid. A father publicly beheaded in the blistering heat of a Saudi Arabian public square. A notorious Syrian biotech expert found eyeless in a Damascus junkyard. Smoldering human remains on a remote mountainside in Afghanistan. A flawless plot to commit an appalling crime against humanity. One path links them all, and only one man can make the journey. Pilgrim.

I couldn't stop once I got into it.
Revisado: 04-28-16
I enjoyed the writing. Details and characters were for the most part close but more extraordinary than my friends. Some of the enlightened problem solving was certainly imaginative.
I wish it were broken into two stories. Connecting the New York murder with the terrorist threat was too far fetched for me. I separated the two stories in my head and thought of how I would tweak them.
All in all, I recommend this read highly.

Revisado: 03-18-16
I enjoyed listening to the story but did not find myself becoming attached to any of the characters. To me it seemed to be a formula book that could be fleshed out after one prepared an outline.
Good enough and I'm sure you will find many fans of the author.

Perspectives of Life, Love and War
Revisado: 04-28-15
So vivid. This book may not ring true for some but for me it awakened and built on my feelings. Yes, these are male perspectives and there are some who might criticize this. Nevertheless, this book is a masterpiece of the perspectives of war and love.
Yes, I'd recommend this as a great read. It gets so much better as it unfolds. The horror of war is very hard to take. Bitter sweet love, the fantasy of love lost, and heroics of "the fire" makes this reader yearn, cry and cry again but for different reasons.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Excellent story well presented
Revisado: 03-28-15
The story caught my imagination and immediately struck a note of possibilities.
I do not particularly enjoy the tetertautering amongst characters, time and places. It was however, well done.
Some of the descriptions were better than good. A blind girl, not from birth, associating colors with creatures.
I loved the ending of bitter sweet memories brought back even though a bit distorted. This book comes close to explaining what the memories of an older individual are like.
