Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Astonishing performance
Revisado: 12-16-23
Ms. Newton performs one of the greatest books ever written with such spirit, power, and heart that I felt as I though were reading it for the first time again - instead of the sixth or seventh.

A story about a little-known world - beautifully reported and told, with a calming narration that was soothing and riveting at the same time.

Perfection
Revisado: 08-10-20
The story, the reader, but most of all the wonderful author, whose generous view of his world and life as a vet in northern England c. 1930s is a balm to the soul.

Historia
The intensely personal David Copperfield (widely regarded to be the most autobiographical of the author’s novels) is one of Dickens’ greatest works. We follow David Copperfield from birth and miserable childhood to inevitable tragedies, until he finally finds happiness later in life. Full of some of the most memorable characters in literary history. Nicholas Boulton’s depiction of the oily Uriah Heep and David Copperfield’s sinister stepfather, Murdstone, do the novel full justice.

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

The best of the best
Revisado: 02-09-19
I’ve always wanted to read Middlemarch but never found the moment to pick it up. Then I began listening to Stevenson’s brilliant rendition for Audible. She somehow manages dozens of characters with absolute confidence and a marvelous voice. I adored this book and am thrilled to have “discovered” Sand for myself. But I’m also searching for other classics read by Stevenson because she is the best of the best. Strongly recommend both: the book and the actor who reads it.
