My heart needed this podcast, which has changed my mind, actions, and my outlook on this world - present and future.

This book explores the theory that Shakespeare's plays were written by Emilia Bassano and other writers - a fascinating concept that was well researched and feels far more plausible than the conspiracy theory some make it out to be.

In the modern storyline, a female playwright writes about Bassano, while facing the patriarchal theater world. The messages in the book felt heavy handed, like a blunt hammer trying to deliver messages of sexism and injustice with little nuance. The back half of the book lost me with unnecessary plot twists, spending far more time with Bassano than felt necessary or interesting, and taking one relationship from 0-100 over a few pages, at which point my suspension of disbelief was taxed.

Not my favorite but she'll have me thinking about the role women artists played in history for quite some time.

Action packed but the writing needed more editing

While I couldn't put this down because I was invested in the characters and it was action packed, the writing and what felt like blatant stealing of details from other fantasy stories detracted from the experience. I hope the writer and her team take the time needed with the next book to salvage this series; it is going downhill quickly.

Slow start, but the end makes up for it.

This book read like a long short story. A central moment that was revealed from several angles, from different perspectives and moments in time, presented as a series of vignettes, like a long montage. I love ESJM's writing, but while the end made up for it, the first half was slow and did not hold my interest. I would have given this 3 stars if the ending had not worked so well. It was helpful to read The Glass Hotel first, as this is in some ways a sequel, with some of the same characters in book books.

Cute! Almost completely dialogue between Vera and Kal, who connect on a long customer service call. I loved Vera's musings and imagination, and Kal's thoughtfulness.

A fitting ending to this tale of human greed, cruelty, grief and redemption. Jemisin throws you into her worlds, and slowly reveals clarifying context. Now that I've seen the tale through to completion, I want to read the whole series again.

This book should be required reading. The stories read like fiction - it's unbelievable how the legal system, laws and regulations are ignored, blatantly sidestepped to convict, regardless of actual guilt. Now I leave this read wondering how I can become a stone catcher.

Slow first half, incredible second half

The first half was slow, but I'm glad I didn't abandon this book. It is dark. Very dark. The aftermath of civil war in London (set in 2021 - eerie considering I'm finishing this book only two days into 2021) is frightening and doesn't take much suspension of disbelief. Highlighting the worst of humanity - and the best - this book has moments of pain and moments of beauty. And the philosophical observations from the (very foul mouthed) dog were a pleasant surprise. Still, to have to make it through half of the book to get to the good stuff - I'd give it 3.5 stars on the whole.

The audio book performances are wonderful.

I devoured this book. Sean Crisden performs the characters beautifully, making me empathize with each of them throughout. My heart broke over and over throughout this story, which twists and turns in the subtle way of real life.
